APPEALING Via MARCHING BAND

^Although I know they have some "recruitment" system with their recuitment crew, they do not successfully reach every single person who is willing to join the band. Of the people I know in the band, they weren't recruited and joined on their own will and interest in the music program. However, some of them after they were already admitted were contacted because they mentioned in their application of their experience in marching band. For me(because I don't speak on behalf of everyone who is appealing through band), I always wanted to join the band and would've done it after being admitted anyways because I REALLY love band. But after discovering that I wasn't, I was totally bummed out not only of the fact that I was rejected but that I didn't have the chance to join the band, until I learned of this appeal.

Yeah bruinj let's kick a$% next year :) The Solid Gold Sound here we come!!!! lol We should be in it anyways, we're freakin defending ourselves for our love of marching band...:)

If football players can be recruited, then so can band members. I don't see anything desperate about appealing to UCLA via band, private colleges do this all the time. It is more of a case of asking admissions to take a second look at a particular student's extracurricular strengths.

That's true

although I do think Henderson won't recruit a clarinet for as good as he may sound... lol

Does USC also accept appeals through marching band?

Have you guys submitted your band appeals yet?! Tomorrow is the recommended deadline. I finished my audition tape but I just need to write a little supplemental letter now.

What Binks say is partly true and untrue. Though, UCLA does take their time reviewing applicants, they could have just done a cursory read over some ECs people have strengths in.

Appealing is not about being desperate, it’s just a second review for the people who knew they were getting in but got denied, albeit other reasons. The reason for appeal, or the sole fact that it exists is for this reason.

With thousands upon thousands of applicants, and a short time to review them, appealing maybe necessary to be accepted in.

Binks, on the other hand, has a point. It does look desperate. I personally have been rejected and thought about appealing as a desperate means, but I didn’t pursue that path. I’m happy that I got in where I got in, and that UCLA wasn’t “meant” to be in some sense. I think those rejected, are appealing on the notion that there is STILL hope. I know this is contradictory, but it’s true. If you ask yourself why you’re appealing, there still that little notion that there is still a chance of getting in after an appeal.

And the notion that “people are more qualified” than those are not are biased views. People who “lower” scores may not be as “qualified” as you, but they might have outshine you in other areas and shown greater if not better ability and determination as you. UCLA has reasons why they accept lower scored people than higher scores, and it’s not about being “under-qualified” or being “more” qualified than other people. It is insane to think of yourself as a “better” applicant just because you have X amount of scores and X amount of ECs than Y person.

Fact is, it could just be jealousy or envy. “More deserving.” That term is an overstatement on these forums and you know it. Just because people are no in the high standards of the UCLA standard does not mean they are under-qualified.

MANY factors are taken into consideration, and blatantly throwing terms like “more deserving” and “over-qualified” or things that demean people’s work throughout high school is plain immature and naive.

But that is just my two cents.

I hope you guys get in! UCSD doesn’t have a bad music program either!

:)

Anyone have any idea how long this process will take? Or how the appeals are handled?

I seriously do not know tptshorty…maybe in a few weeks they’ll notify us??? i really don’t know…lol…And I noticed there are a lot more appeals uploaded onto youtube this year too haha… hopefully we’ll both get in…i hope so cuz i really worked my butt of with my video…:)

Hey guys…so I contacted Jennifer Judkins…and I asked her when they will notify us if we were selected or not…and she said “MxXxXxX- It has not been released yet - we’re still working on it. If you don’t hear by end of next week - email the Director Gordon Henderson at gh@ucla.edu. J”…so let’s all just hope that we’ll get in…=)

^ Ooh, thanks! I was beginning to get antsy…haha. Do you have any good ideas how it’ll work though–like, if they decide to accept us to the Band, then they will just forward us onto the appeals committee? And then they will ultimately decide if they will admit us based on what…our GPA and old application?
I’m considering sending a regular appeal letter this week, too, just saying “oh hey, i did a band appeal also” and some smaller, but still “new” information.

^I have no idea…possibly… ? Me too…I’m going to send a regular appeal this week, mentioning “new” & “compelling” information along with my love for their school and that I’m also appealing through band(which I <3) …haha…Lol

Anybody hear back yet? :/
