How exactly do we go about appealing. Just send a letter to the office of admissions with omitted docs (medical or other), letters of rec., and a transcript with senior grades?

I think so.

ni24045, you might want to check around about this, but I'm pretty sure that during the appeals process they are looking for information about what happened before the UC app was turned in (sophomore and junior years). If your friend failed to mention the reasons for his bad grades in his personal essays, then I would definitely say that he should appeal. However, if the academic hindrances happened after he turned in his application, I don't think that it will be considered. It also helps a whole lot if your friend also mentions what he gained from the negative experiences and how they have made him a stronger person. Otherwise they will just think, "OK, he suffered, so what?"

I hope that helps. Good luck.

I've been struggling with serious depression. Would that be considered a valid reason to appeal? I know it sounds like an excuse or some kind of plea for sympathy, but it has presented many obstacles for me academically, especially during my junior year.

I'm reluctant to appeal, because I think it seems cheap, but Cal is where I'd really like to spend the next four years of my life. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be, if you believe in fate and all that jazz...

If I decide to appeal I was thinking I would include letters of rec, some artwork, and also mention the extensive community service I've completed this year. Any advice?

Also, when do they determine the decision after the appeals process? Will I know before May 1st?

well...if you can express that without it sounding like you are just trying to get the appeal, then you can try. You should all understand, very few people are succesful with appeals and it is based on unique/extreme circumstances (from what I gather).

Dalai Lama once said that "not getting what you want can sometimes be a wonderful stroke of luck".

after talking to my counselor i think i will just let it go, it wasn't meant to be...

Actually Senior year grades are not a basis for appeal, so if that's the only thing different don't even bother.

i think there's a lot of groups at cal who are more than willing to help you appeal. they came to our highschool yesterday & told us about it. during this time of the year, after decisions are out, their inboxes are flooded with emails asking them for help.

not only will they help you gather your stats & make your appeal, they'll actually go out there and be a 'voice' for you & get over 200+ sign a petition for you.

im at school right now soo.. i don't have the name on me.
but it's a bunch of multicultural groups (you dont have to be that ethnicity either). like some flip group.. i'll check when i get home

Yes my friend did mention it briefly but did not go into much detail for fear of sounding whiny. and adorkable, mind giving me the emails and names of those students? This is my best friend, and I'm really hoping he'll get into cal.
