appearance in your audition....

In two weeks I am auditioning for the musical theatre programs at Emerson College and New York University. I just recently got my nose pierced and now I am worried about whether that would look bad to someone on the audition board. Now when I say nose piercing I am not talking about a ring, it is just a really small diamond that really isn't even that visible. Give me your suggestions. Should I take it out? Or does it even matter?

Hey sopranogirl,

You know what, I too have a small stud in my nose (haha) I know that you are worried b/c I am about it too. I mean, you know what, my take on it is I guess it'll help you "sparkle" more to the judges lol.

If it was a septum piercing that looked like a bull's ring, that could be very distracting you know, but something like a stud it's barely noticeable unless you have a ring out of there lol. I would say no worries.

PS I forgot. One of my friends has gotten into 3 mt programs with a stud so it couldn't be too bad lol!

thanks Jeremybeach, you actually alleviated my worries a bit. Maybe now I can tell my mom to stop freaking out about it, even if it is what she does best!

Hahaha, no prob! I guess your mom and my mom must've been best friends during childhood in that case then...lol

My other D who is a (Senior) Ad. Major has a tiny one too. She has been interning for major major (some considered conservative) companies. Her resume proves that the nose piercing was not an issue (rather received compliments). Tell your mom - times have changed. :-)
Does it show through in your headshot? (You might stand out.)
I would imagine that in the world of art you should be able to express yourself. ;-)

Hi,

I wish you all the best. I completely back your right to self expession. I would simply caution you in this way - for many a small simple piecing would not matter in the least - but for some auditors it might matter. This business of being admitted to top MT program is very competitive, so I would think you would want to a) show yourself at your very best; and b) try to minimize anything that might remotely be taken as a negative. So, I would lose the piercing for the audition. As I have written here before - the audition (actually every audition you will ever be part of) is actually a job interview and should be approached as such. Again, I completely respect your choice, and if you were auditioning for me, it would not matter - but it might matter to someone else.

hmmm...interesting question. Personally if it is tasteful and small (I got a great visual from the Bulls ring comment :)) ,it might not be noticed. Depending on the school, it seems like you are not right on top of the auditioners most of the time(although some are close enough to see it I guess). Based on my visitng my D at a small faith based college, it seems like there are a lot of them these days. My opinion (which with 2$ you can get a small coffee!!) - keep it in!

MikksMom

If the original poster just got the nose piercing done, she pretty much has to keep it in or else risk having the wound close up prematurely.
But anyone who is thinking about perhaps getting a big tattoo of some kind before auditions: why not hold off? ;) (Seriously, you might want to hold off permanently on the tattooes if you want to be an actor. I have been seriously distracted by actors' tattooes on stages, especially one period play that I attended where I could see this large face peering out at me from behind the actor's white stockings and knickers. Not cool.)

I don't know if this can be done with a new piercing, but I know they have a clear plastic stud that is designed for the purpose of miniizing the look of piercings.

I must admit that my personal preference is to no tattoos or piercings. However, my suggestion in this case is that you can go with it, if you wish. Then, in every audition situation I know of, there is contact with current students before you actually go "in the room". I would suggest looking around you - if current students boast anything similar, go for it. If not, discreetly remove it before the audition itself.

If you worry that it would be an issue, you can put a tiny flesh colored bandaid over it. I know my D's friend wore one over an earring when he just got pierced for auditions.

The problem with flesh colored bandaids on the nose is that they're more prominent than on the ear. In sports its okay, but the fact is bandaids always stick out because they can't match the natural inflections in everyone's skin tone (especially on the face). You could try putting makeup over the bandaid, I suppose, but I imagine that just looking really odd.

imho, best not to draw attention to it (which I think a bandaid would do more than just leaving it in) It really shouldn't be a problem. The piercing will be done healing by the time you enroll--and I'm sure they know that. They may ask you at your audition if--when asked to remove it (in future)--would you? But chances are it will just be ignored and have no impact. :)

i don't think a tiny nose stud will have that big of an impact on your admission. if it does... wha???
