Apple Mac or PC for college? Are tablets necessary?

I'm going to be a science major (bio, chem, that sort of thing) so would a Mac or PC be better? Also, if MAC, Air or Pro?

I have the Galaxy phone and plan to get the 5 in April. Someone told me that all my devices should be of the same brand so I can sync them, but there is no way in hell I'm going to buy an iPhone like BYE FELECIA :'). So do you think what brand my phone is should impact my laptop/tablet?

iPhones work better with some of Apple’s software but that’s about it. You don’t need to match the brand of your phone to the brand of your computer.

** For people who aren’t too familiar with computers , I tend to recommend a Mac. The Air or Retina Pro would both be good choices in that case. You would have to decide what you would trade off. The current Air gets better battery life than the Retina model but the Retina model is faster and has a much better screen. Mac laptops can also run Windows 7/8 but you’ll need to buy extra software to do that.**

If you want a Windows based laptop , you should focus on business class machines especially since they have good warranty ( you can get on-site NBD service + better general service) and they are built to last longer than regular laptops. There are also some other benefits to owning certain Windows based laptops but I wouldn’t get into that unless you are going to be doing engineering design work (e.g. CAD) or some other specialized work like that.

Some models that come to mind are the following:
Dell Precision M3800
HP Zbook 14
Fujitsu Lifebook U904
Lenovo ThinkPad T440s

You should state your budget so it would be easier to recommend some models for you.

Price isn’t an issue (saved up a nice amount of $$$ from work!). Thank you @del_psi!
