I'm going to be doing an ECE. If i get through that is...

what other schools did you get in?

well.. georgiatech & uiuc..
I'm sending in my housing applications anyway.. non refundable but if i get too late I won't get a good place to live

I applied to nine universities though.. Stanford, UCB.. cornell, still waiting on these 3.. I dream alot :)

we all dream...:)

AcceptedtocollegeAlready, I was being a bit facetious. However, I do believe, in part, that the waiting builds expectations, which, in turn, builds desire for the school. Yes, I can assume that with 18,000+ applications, they aren't done with all applicaitions, as you noted. However, they are done with 15,000. They, thus, can send out notification to those whose applications have been completely reviewed!

Haha I agree they should've used some of that new tuition money to hire some more people to review the data.

But remember, 3k more apps doesn't mean the time schedule is linear. It is actually quite exponential. Marginal cost rises as quantity increases (it costs more resources, time, to create the next item that is a decided application).

Think about it this way, it takes you 6 minutes to run a mile. Does that mean it takes you 60 minutes to run 10 miles? Of course not (unless you are some kinda track star). It'll probably take you quite a while longer.

3k more apps means they have to review 3k more apps comprehensively. It means they have to go through everything, put people into piles of auto reject(some have already got decisions), auto admit(some have already got decisions), and then go through everything again to see where the middle range is so they can start waitlisting/rejecting/accepting.

Finding that "fine line" between accept and reject gets harder and harder as applications increase. I however, do blame CMU admissions for not pre-empting this and hiring MORE people to review decisions. Either they have no one qualified at the moment or they did thought the increase in apps was only going to be 10%?

I really hope they get done soon for everyone's sake as I out of ANYONE would know how expectation feels to a senior high school student and his/her parents.

I'll actually ask the admissions office about their overall status tomorrow and see what they can do to speed things up a bit.

Accepted notes,"I'll actually ask the admissions office about their overall status tomorrow and see what they can do to speed things up a bit.":

Response: Hail to AcceptedtoCollegeAlready. I'll vote for you for president, if you ever run. I don't think that they are in a hurry to get any decision out though. As I said, waiting builds desire.

hmm. as much as I'd like to believe and root for you. Accepted, do you even have such influence or authority over the entire or part of the process?

BUT!!! if you do, dont let this stop you from using you "power," whether physical, mental, etc, etc

go, go, go!

JUst wanted to point out CMU isn't unique in this regard...I'm sure at this late date many of the accept/WL/reject decisions have already been made at you name it college. Cornell or Middlebury lets say would be in bad shape if they didn't have (I'm guessing) 3/4 of their acceptances figured out by now...they're not telling yet...so why is CMU any different from any other selective school?

I'm not sure what the optimal time is, for the college that is, to do the notifying. Too early and the student will be psyched and excited at the time of acceptance, but that could wear off when later acceptances roll in. Too late and it could get lost among others.

Generally nearly all the most selective schools notify from about mid March till early April, kids and their parents know this and can plan accordingly.

This is true and it's also true they will not "hurry" something because of my request. However I can find out what they are THINKING and relay it back to you guys, at least.

irrelevant question following:

I applied for MCS, but after submitting the app (and months later) I realized that I should've applied to mcs AND to cas/las (stats may not look so well for such a competitve place as mcs and the other major oriented schools). Are there any cases in which, say, the applicant isn't really qualified for mcs but they think so for cas/las (though the applicant did not put that down)???

No. If you do not put it down, they will not randomly accept you into other schools.

If they did this, our acceptance rate would be INFLATED and our ranking would decrease on Us News. Imagine if SCS applicants were put through a gauntlet of all six schools until they were finally accepted.

Unless you put down a second choice school, they will not consider you for any other schools rather than MCS.

PS: What is LAS?

college of arts and sciences/literature, arts, and sciences? maybe he meant H&SS?

haha im a she

i confused cas and las because at some schools cas is las-- liberal arts and science.

ahh i apologize

Might not be too late to add a secondary college if you desire. Call and ask?

I know I added a secondary college but this was during ED even though it was past the ED deadline.

i'll try that next week but i mean, we FIND OUT in just a few weeks, so it may not be so successful.

The increase in apps has caused some slowdown.

I was told that the avg college decisons come out about the same time as Carnegie Mellon's March 21st to Mid-April. Why do you guys think Carnegie Mellon is with-holding them when about 80% of other colleges are doing the same? To confirm my assumption, I found this post on CC.com http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=153321

Carnegie Mellon wants to coordinate sending mail with our peers. Our peers can be found on here http://www.cmu.edu/ira/peer_institutions.htm

Finally, Good luck in admissions!

this is a link to CC last year, CMU decision thread. It's long...this'll put you on page 7 when the decisions start to roll in; date is March 25:

Good times... good times..
