What did you write about for your college application essays? How far back can it be (does it have to be fairly recent?)

You can write about almost anything as long as you do it well. I wrote about how my dad’s job (police officer) got me interested in law and about how choir helped me get over my perfectionism. You can definitely write about past events as long add you tie them in to who you are today. Just make them personal, insightful, and revealing. I received many compliments on my admissions essays and would be happy to help you - just message me and let me know. Best of luck.

The UCs have two personal statements: one about your social background and one about a personal accomplishment or experience that changed your life. I wrote the first one about homeschooling (surprise) and the second one about high school speech and debate.

Without knowing anything else, I would say the more recent, the better.
