Do you submit the same essays for different schools (if the topics are similar) or you write different essays for every single college?

You try to write the same essays, adapted as needed. The only essays that are unique are the ‘why do you want to attend x university.’ Sometimes, of course, the school will ask for an essay that you simply haven’t written before, in which case, it’s terra nova. But you can usually find this out over the summer before your senior year, so you have plenty of time to do it.

Even if one is applying to 15+ schools?

Applying to 15+ schools is a waste of time and money to begin with, but I don’t see why that would make a difference in whether or not you could reuse essays?

Does 10 sound reasonable? Also, I don’t really know how to research universities. There are hundreds of them and how will I be able to find the ones that suit me the most (I only the one that I really love, but shouldn’t I find some safety schools?)

i tried to use different essays because most of my schools r a crapshoot, and if one of the essays turn out to b amazing, it’d really boost that application, but i’m not going to place all my wagers on the one essay.
- if colleges have specific prompts, most can tell if you wrote one just for them, or if you adapted it from something else.

With regards to researching schools, you should look for schools that match up to your stats: GPA, SAT/ACT, the likes. Also, if you have an idea of a field you want to go into, then research what schools tend to have the better program for it. It’s all about mapping out what exactly you want from a school, and prioritizing those preferences. I suggest getting the Princeton Review 371 (or some number like that) Best Colleges guidebook. It helped me out a lot!

I applied to 16, and I used the same essay for all of them. A couple required a few extra essays, but my “core common app” essay was the same.
