If it fits the topic, there shouldn't be any reason not to.

Yes

Yes but it probably won't help much. They know that there are lot's of people who can't afford to go abroad to volunteer.

essay: depends on the prompt, etc. most people change at least one paragraph for each school to customize their essay.

the Africa program, it wouldn't hurt. so if you want to do a program like that, it's definitely worth it. i don't know how much it weighs into admissions though.

I know this sounds silly but how much would it weigh into admissions though? I shouldn't be thinking like that - I should follow my interests - I know that. But I just would like to know anyway.

*Should I use the same essay for each school I'm applying to? What did/are you planning to do? *

If you're doing the common app, the same personal statement goes to every school. If they ask for a "Why this school?" essay, then DO NOT use one essay with reasons like "great education, great location, etc." The best "Why?" essays are specific and show you know a lot about each school. (And if you HAVE to do it, get several people to double and triple check and make sure you don't accidentally put the wrong school name into the essay).

You should be VERY VERY careful about doing it for other essays. Only do it if the prompts are very very similar- don't stretch anything. Schools are sometimes familar with their competition's prompts.

Can I take the SAT tests in my senior year? (Fall 2008).

You are able to (there's an october and a november)- check the SAT calendar on collegeboard. If you want time to retake them if it doesn't go well, then you might to take the one in June. That gives you summer to work on your scores and then retake in the fall. Also, if any of your schools require SATIIs, then you should definitely start the standardized testing process at the end of this year.

Stuff like a three-week volunteer program in Africa, does that make you a stronger applicant?

I'd say it helps you a little, but probably having a volunteering job that relates to your major/interests would look better. One near home, one where you can volunteer every week and show dedication.
