Application Logistics

Hello, I’m currently waiting on my Early Decision application to the University of Chicago and have prepared for the worst by writing the majority of my regular decision schools. I know it’s essential to have “safety”, “match”, and “reach” schools, however, I feel like my case is somewhat different.

The “match” and “safety” schools my counselor and I have drafted do not offer much financial aid and I CANNOT apply for FAFSA (or Federal Loans) as I am a DACA recipient; My divorced father makes NO INCOME; how we get by is through my brother who is in the US Army and getting a bonus income to send remittances ($24,000 annual) for when he is in Korea. The problem is starting next year, he will be stationed in the US and will no longer receive that bonus and the maximum he will be able to send to us is going to drop to around $12,000-$15,000 annual, barely covering living expenses; my father is currently looking for a job. With this, even my community college is beyond our financial possibility.

That said, I have made a list of “reach” schools which will offer 100% need meet if I am miraculously accepted in the regular round, assuming my UChicago application gets rejected. I have a mix of “low reach”, “middle reach”, and “high reach” schools in my list and would like to know if this list is reasonable and would greatly appreciate your help. Disclaimer: I apologize if I sound pretentious with my list, that is not and has not been my intent with these kind of posts.

I apologize in advance if this should be in the “Chance Me” category, but I put it in the “Admissions” category as the original intent was to see if my list was reasonable given my circumstance. Again, I sincerely thank you guys!

Did you apply to any of the places on the Automatic Full-tuition/full-ride list at the top of the Financial Aid Forum? Go there and work through that list. Find the ones that are available to DACA recipients and that you haven’t missed the cut-off for.

The resume is very impressive, bro. However, please remember that any schools of such are kind of like a lottery game; nobody will ensure your ability to be chosen. Maybe try refining the essay by highlighting the fact that you desperately want to be the one of your family, like using the card of emotion?

Thanks. I have checked some of the Universities and after calling a few, it seems that the majority of them provide free tuition to only US legal residenrs/Citizens as they are State schools.

Yes, some of those scholarships are only for US applicants. But at least through application season in 2017 some were still being awarded to international applicants. That is why you have to check each of them separately.

Ah I see thank you I will make sure to call their offices afterschool. For my list right now, are they “reasonable” considering my hooks and “statistics”? I know it’s a lottery either way in the end but could I reasonably see to get into at least 1/2 of the list above?

You have an impressive record. In your situation, there are no safeties. I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to apply to as many 100% full need schools as you can reasonably write good applications for, but you should carefully choose.

I’m afraid that if you don’t get into any of these schools, you will need to either get a job and earn some money which will unfortunately delay your education, or apply to a school in your home country, give up DACA and after excelling at your university, perhaps apply to US or Canadian graduate schools. Canada lets foreign students work.

There are some other schools that according to wiki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need-blind_admission#U.S._institutions_that_are_need-blind_and_meet_full_demonstrated_need_for_both_U.S._and_international_students

provide 100% full need but are need aware for admissions. Some that might be a little easier to get into are
Grinnell
Davidson
Hamilton
University of Richmond
University of Southern California
Vassar

Good luck! I’m rooting for you.

Yes, please consider some LACs, and @ClassicRockerDad offers some good choices for international students. They are more likely to see you as an URM because fewer Asian students are drawn to liberal arts colleges. Grinnell in particular awards a lot of need and merit aid. These are all really great schools and I think you’d do well at any of them.

Congrats on your hard work and success in high school and keep us posted!

Ah thank you so much! I’m quite surprised to know USC provides full meet needs to DACAmented students (and the other colleges). Thank you so much @ClassicRockerDad and everyone who gave suggestions.
