Application Question

I am in a bit of a bind.

I am a rising sophomore at a reputable liberal arts college.

I have two Ds on my transcript so far (Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2). My teacher and I just did not click and I did not do well on his tests.

I asked my college if I can retake the two classes at a different college and they said if I took the classes elsewhere, they would not count towards my GPA.

If I retook the class at a different college, would Dental Schools still be able to see that I put the effort in to retake the class even though it wouldn't count towards my GPA? Dental Schools often require a C or better in pre-reqs, so would retaking the class and getting a good grade in a different college count as getting better than a D?

You are required to list all the college level courses you have taken when you apply for dental schools. So dental schools will certainly see your grades from both your current college and the other college. The problem is that it may be very difficult for you to get a good science GPA with two D’s already. You need a science GPA of at least 3.2 to have a realistic chance of dental school acceptance.

I suggest you retake the class with another instructor at your same college. However, i would wait a bit to do so and I would study some gen chem on my own first. I would read the whole textbook during the summer. If you get these grades again you will be in trouble-so study as if your life depended on it and go over the material with the teacher as you go. become the profs best friend for a while. This is advise from a dentist of 25 years who received 2 C- grades in calc freshmen year.
