Application Question?

Yeah Ben, except for the part where you don't know how to drive in Jersey. =P

Hey Ben! I have a few more questions that deal with the scholastic distinctions question.

Two things I want to list involve people/schools from two states, and another had people mostly from my state (New Jersey), though there were a few people from Tennessee and China (random, I know). Would they count as a state-wide distinction, or something else?

Does debate/forensics count as scholastic, or should I mention those awards somewhere else?

Do acceptances into competitive programs count as distinctions?

Also, the activities section asks us not to send a resume in lieu of answering those questions. But can we send a resume to supplement the whole application? I would like some more room to list a few other activities and awards.

I can attempt to answer (hopefully Ben won't mind). ;-)

Sounds closer to state than national or international to me. I'd mark down state. You can always explain in further detail in one of the application segments meant for it.

2. Does debate/forensics count as scholastic, or should I mention those awards somewhere else?

It counts. :)

3. Do acceptances into competitive programs count as distinctions?

Indeed they can.

You can, but I think the last thing the adcom wants to see is a laundry list of activities. There is a reason there are only 5 items on that segment, they want to know what interests you the most and specifically about those activities. If you want to elaborate on these five, there are plenty of opportunities on the application itself to do so (even a whole optional essay just for whatever you want!).

So yeah, if you send in a resume so you can "list a few other activities and awards", they'll read it, but it's not what they're looking for...

Thanks, Olo!

Actually, I have one more question. Would it be advisable to group related activities together? For example, I'm in two environmental organizations (one in school, one out of school). Would it be best to call the activity Environmental Groups and explain somewhere else?

I know applicants (now students ;) ) who did exactly that.

@theoneo: I think that's the way to go. :).

Wow, thanks guys! Beat me to it. :-)

Hey, for the additional information section, would it be too inconvenient if I attached another essay, probably around a page long? I really couldn't tweak it so it belongs in one of the required responses, so...

That's fine. :-)

"Use one line only per class—for example, it’s not necessary to use a separate line for each semester of the same class. Place all grades for a class in the same field, separating grades with commas."

My school has 3 trimester classes within the "pre-calculus" class, can I just group them up into "Pre-calculus"? The classes have various names, such as Functions and Graphs, Trig, and Advanced Topics in Precal.

Also, I've found that if I photoshop the application, and shift the different subjects into empty spaces, I'll have enough room. Would ya'll mind if I did that, and left a note saying I shifted somethings up? or would it be better to just include the extra classes in the "Is there anything else you want to tell us", like what Olo did?

gracias

oh, and one more question.

do we have to include all classes that we took outside of school, like say at a junior college? I took a few as non-credit, and didn't know colleges would want to see them. So I pretty much just went for fun, didn't do homework, and didn't study much for exams.

"didn't do homework, and didn't study much for exams"

I hope you don't do that in college. :)

haha yeah right...

I just wanted to clarify that I was not required, pushed, or recommended to take these summer classes. I guess you could call it 'personal enrichment.'

Yes, you can just lump those together under pre-calc. And probably best to use the "anything else" space instead of photoshopping. :-)

RE the summer classes - totally up to you. If you think they'll look good, list 'em! If not, you're certainly not required to.

haha, on a tangent from my photoshop question... I saw some of your photoshopped Olo pictures on facebook, lol.

I took a course call the Montgomery County Mathematically Precocious Youth Program... how should i abbreviate it on the application? Or should I just acronym it and make a note at the bottom? I emailed you guys about a week ago but didn't recieve a response. = (

Do the latter - that should be fine.

Another question -

I took Algebra I, which is a high school class and counted on the transcript, in 8th grade, so how can we select lower than 9th grade?

Also, there were some useful activities I did in 8th grade that I sort of built on which I wouldn't mind listing in the Activity Section, but is that strictly a no-no, listing activities/events/awards from 8th grade?

Edit - I also realized this with foreign language. I was finished with my foreign language requirements for an adv. diploma in 10th grade, due to taking the first year in middle school . . .

And a social science requirement, took it in 8th grade.

8th grade was a pretty important year!

And,

When they ask if bio or chem was taken, do they mean chem I/bio I or ap?
