Application Withdrawal

Looking for advice. My child has been accepted Early Action to his top choice school; yes, I know this is wonderful news. However, two other schools are a close second, and he won't here from them until April. He also applied to a few other schools. The question is whether to withdraw his applications from the other schools. Obviously, this would allow others to potentially gain spots he will relinquish later (if accepted other schools), but it's possible - though highly unlikely - he'll lose his spot at the top choice if his grades drop or due to some other unfortunate circumstance. Are there other negatives to withdrawing other applications now?

My vote would be no, do not withdraw applications. A lot can happen between now and April. For example, Our daughter had picked her college and she declined all but 1 other acceptance. On the very last day, she changed her mind. She called and cancelled the acceptance (which we could still do) and accepted the other school. Also, there can be unforseen financial changes that occur that might affect a decision. Schools know the numbers they need to accept to get the number they want.

If it's nonbinding Early Action, there is no need or moral imperative to withdraw other applications.

Binding Early Decision is a different situation. In that instance, applicants who are accepted are required to withdraw all of their applications to other colleges.

Years ago, when I was applying to college, I withdrew some applications because I really, really didn't want to go. I think your decision is based on a few things:

Are you waiting for a financial aid award? If so, don't withdraw at any school where you may get aid.

Is he willing to go to the other schools or is there a good reason to keep each school on the list (for example, he would consider his safety if he got into their honors program or a full ride)? If so, leave it in.

Has he completed his first semester well?

Personally, I would withdraw from the other schools if I wasn't waiting for aid and if I knew I would go to my admit school-- but that's just me. As Marian said, there is no moral imperative to do that and I would probably leave the decision up to him.

I don't think you need to worry about "taking someone's place"... Your child will only attend one school. All other admission spots will go to other students - either now, or in the spring.
