has anyone here ever applied for the wells program through the nomination by office of admissions process, ie their school is not a nominating school Have a couple of questions

No, but I’m sure you’ve seen this page.

[Wells Scholars Program: IU Scholarships: Costs & Financial Aid: Office of Admissions: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.admit.indiana.edu/cost/scholarships/wells-scholars.shtml)

If it’s general questions about the process, someone might be able to answer them. 2 out of the past 3 years someone from D’s school received this scholarship.

thanks rrah, i just have a concern about the process. son already submitted as oos, but wanted to know if we were worrying about something unnecessarily. if any one has experience with process feel free to pm

so here is the question> to try for wells from an out of state non nominating school, you had to submit certain documents and application to the office of admissions by sept 21 and the office of admissions can nominate a few students. If nominated, the student would be contacted to submit further information and required material by early October with a final submission date of end of October.

we sent son’s package fed ex and tracking states it was received on sept 16th (before deadline). about 10 days later called to see if anything was missing (paper app submitted so can not track online) admissions stated app probably there but not loaded into system.

emailed today and received email reply stating IF application was there it could be a few more weeks before it was loaded into system, and to contact the scholarship dept re any scholarships (but if app not in system how could any scholarship dept know anything about it).
we are concerned that his app has not been looked at for the wells program as it doesnt even appear to be logged in yet, and therefore deadline is past.

normally i would let him deal with it, but this is a biggie for him, would it be reasonable for me to contact the counselor for this region and ask her to specifically find his app and see where it is and if reviewed?

we understand that chances for the nomination are slim even though he exceeds the stated minimum criteria but would be so unfair if he did all he was supposed to but it is sitting on a desk somewhere

i decided to email specific counselor for region and ask if they can track it down and check on the status and whether it made it to the appropriate place . especially after reading posts that said some here were accepted within 10 days or so of all materials being summitted. as his was all together ie app, transcript, letters, etc. i would think it should at least been loaded, hope it hasnt been lost???hope it was the right thing to do. if it wasnt for the 21st deadline i wouldnt even worrying this early,

parent56,

Thanks for all the great information on the nominating process–I always wondered about this myself. I have students (not my own, but sons and daughters of relatives) who are interested in attending IU-B from here in California in two to three years or so and who (based on grades so far) will probably be interested in knowing how this works.

calcruzer, an update…so as not to leave anyone here with a worry. although extremely frustrating at certain points, Indiana had it under control!!! it would appear that the process for wells nomination oos through admissions is a 2 step process. it looks like it is reviewed by committee and once that decision is made, then it goes into a regular admission type cycle.
son’s app finally showed up online on oct 13 with an application date of 0ct 12 (which was the reason for worry…no word for a while and then a date that was past the deadline) HOWEVER, just got letter today with status of nomination (not nominated) and an email that says thank you for applying to IU.
so if any OOS person tries in the future, perhaps this will help calm you…not to say if you are worried you shouldnt check things out, but as I said it turns out IU was doing everything right. That month gap was just frustrating. And IU remains high on the list!!!
