UW-Madison has received a record number of applications for next fall 's freshman class. To date, the admissions office has received 24,747 applications -- up about 500 from this time last year.

The university will admit about 12,000 students -- 2,000 fewer than last year -- in hopes of having a freshman class of about 5,700, according to admissions director Robert Seltzer. Many students who are admitted choose not to enroll.

Of course, the official data of UW-Madison shows the school received 24,870 applications for its class of 2011. That is about 150 more applications than the reported record.

Reading comp 101--

"To date, the admissions office has received 24,747 applications -- up about 500 from this time last year.

No reading comprehension challenge here, just misleading reporting of preliminary data.

More applications, lower admissions, and much higher yield ... let's revisit it in the summer and separate wishful thinking from facts.

Last year's yields were 25% OOS and nearly 65% instate. Tuition increases for OOS were kept low and instate is already low. The yield projections are conservative if anything.

via the Colgate board, apps at >9400, so far a 7.3% increase over last year (8759).

Look, Barrons, we can safely assume that Seltzer is relying on the advice of well-remunerated enrollment managers to predict the admissions and yield curves correctly. You see to have reasons to believe that Wisconsin should be able to flip the percentage of admissions and yield in one year. Well, power to you.

The question is why this --and the fantastic 2% record temporary increase-- is remarkable in the context of admissions for the Class of 2012.

The yields are not projected to "flip" of anything of the sort. They are consistent with prior years as shown in the report I linked. Yields dipped after the big tuition increase a few years ago but since then the UW's tuition has dropped to near the lowest in the Big 10 for both in and OOS and yield has gone back to historical levels.

By flipping the admit and yield rates, I meant that the the admission rates ought to go down by 8% and the yield increase by almost as much.

Admission Down, Yield Up = flipping percentages.

Class of 2011
Applied 24870
Admitted 13977 56%
Enrolled 5982 43%

Projected Class of 2012
Applied 24747
Admitted 12000 48%
Enrolled 5700 48%

Fwiw, I'll bet you a couple of Coronas that the final admission and yield rates will be nowhere close to 48% when all the dust settles.

Make the over/under 50.00% and deal.

For the sake of clarity, I'll take that admit rates will be above 50% and yield below 50%. :)

Just the admit rate--50.00% or less. Yield will follow but could have a different mix as in instate swings up to 70% and OOS falls. Lots of possibilities when you add Internationals and Minn. kids into the mix.

A $100 million gift from an anonymous alumnus as well as the generosity of numerous individuals and corporations have allowed W&L to offer scholarships of at least tuition, room and board to approximately ten percent of each incoming class.

IU had received more than 29,000 applications as of mid-February this year, surpassing last years total number of 28,500 applications, IU Director of Admissions Mary Ellen Anderson said. The Office of Admissions stops taking applications in August.

IU is not the only school experiencing drastic increases in applications. Seventy-three percent of colleges across the country reported the number of admission applications had increased from the previous year, according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, State of College Admission 2006 report.

The nationwide increase in college applications may be attributed to a continued increase in the number of high school graduates and to college enrollment being at an all-time high. Both high school graduates and college enrollments are expected to increase until at least 2014, according to the report.
