My son got an acceptance letter to SUNY-Fredonia about a month ago. We were so excited for his first acceptance we didn’t read the letter carefully. He was accepted to the wrong music concentration. He inadvertently put down Music Industry on his application when he meant to put Sound Recording and Technology. He just sent an email to admissions with high priority asking what can be done. I’m a little panicked!!! Fredonia is a selective program for SRT and it is a strong contender if the financial aid for his first choice doesn’t come through, which is highly likely. What are the chances he can get it switched at this point???
D3 had something similar happen with one of her applications. A quick phone call resolved the problem. Good luck!
As if the process isn’t stressful enough! How similar are the two majors and their auditions/application materials? I’m sure you’ll get it straightened out, and I’m sure it’s not the first time something like that had happened there. (Very different situation in a lot of ways, but last year my son was accepted into the conservatory at SUNY Purchase, and then got cold feet and decided to change his major to Economics at the last minute, because he got it into his head that they’d made a “mistake” accepting him and that he “wasn’t good enough”…heh…fortunately he got over that idea! But Purchase has been very flexible and accommodating, and I assume that Fredonia will be helpful as well.)
Good luck with it, and let us know how it turns out!
They’re not similar at all. The Music Industry concentration is connected to a business degree. It’s not even part of the school of music! I cannot believe we screwed up this badly, and yet at the same time I’m a bit amused that my son has been accepted into a business program, that is SOOOO not him. I also can’t believe I was staring at this letter and didn’t even notice the acceptance was to the wrong program—for over a month!!! SRT is very competitive and its a small program so I’m concerned that this will not be as simple as a transfer of application materials from one department to another. Also, he had an audition, which is not required for Music Industry. On the audition form he did put down SRT as his first choice. It strikes me as odd that no one even questioned why he was there if he supposedly didn’t need to audition for the program he got into. It’s all quite a mess and he emailed as soon as he realized the mistake. The issue has been forwarded to a counselor who will respond at some point but we haven’t heard anything yet. Thank you for the encouraging words
My son is a theater student at Fredonia. We found the admissions people to be very helpful last year. I suggest that you place a call to them and to the department you want him to be in if you don’t hear back within a day or so. I will say that my son is very happy there and the school and the facilities are pretty nice for a SUNY.
Good luck.
Well the results are in, and it’s a moot point. He didn’t pass the audition Had he passed, they would have contacted him about the discrepancy and placed him in the correct major in the SOM. He’s more upset than he’s showing…It’s not a good day.
oh no…I’m so sorry. Does he have other options on the table still?
Yes he does! Got into the program at Hartt! Found out today
Congrats @musicmom38 ! Hartt is a wonderful choice.
