I appreciate JHU's acceptance and financial aid.
However, I am having second thoughts about whether or not JHU is the proper fit.
If I do not like JHU after my first year, how hard is it to transfer to another school?
I will definitely try to make the most out of my JHU experience though---but just in case.

Depends on where you apply to. Naturally, it is much harder to transfer to a top school. In fact, the acceptance rate for transfers at Hopkins is below 10%.

Why would you apply ED if you had the slightest bit of uncertainty?

Quick facts for Howdy: 97% return for Sophmore year. Only 3% do not. That number should speak volumes to you! It is a big number. If I had to guess, of the 3% that do not (roughly 40 students), 10 probably do not return due to finances, 10 probably do not return due to poor academic performance, 10 find Hopkins was a wrong fit, and 10 have some personal issues that keep them from returning.

It is natural to have these 2nd thoughts. You have made a big commitment. You have also limited your choices come April, so you will have a lot of “I wonder if I had applied to xxx, would I have gotten in”. But you chose ED, and your commitment willl stand. Go to the school expecting the best and take it from there. Your fears are normal. But something about JHU made you want it, you just have to remember what it was.

You’ll love Hopkins - it’s challenging but you’ll be just fine.

Throw your uncertainties aside, they’re normal to have.

Relax, breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the fact that you’re off to one of the world’s great universities!

Congratulations on being accepted!

Okayyy -takes deep breath, envisions walking into Gilman Hall-
Okayy I’ll be fine. “one of the world’s greatest universities.” :)

Top ten in 47 of its 51 majors. You’ll be fine :)

13th in the nation, 18th in the world.

Now THAT speaks volumes.

It’ll be easy to transfer… to a weaker school. Transferring to a peer school will only be possible if you are doing well at Hopkins. Transfer admission rates are usually less than half of freshman admission rates, so getting into Brown, Cornell, or WUSTL as a transfer will be a substantial challenge.

What makes you uncertain about going to Hopkins?

13th in the world according to new rankings

Buyers remorse is very common–and usually very short lived. I think it was Groucho Marx who said: " I don’t want to be in any club that would accept me as a member." :)

You’ll discover that there is a lot to love about Hopkins. Relax.

agreed to everything said above. why feeling uncertain? regardless, I strongly believe that your college experience is what you make of it. if you go to Hopkins with a positive attitude and expose yourself to what’s offered, you will love it.

https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/CA_10-11_TransferPacket.pdf – this is the common app transfer application; it’s not too bad, pretty similar to freshman application.

just have confidence in yourself – you’ll make the right decision for you.

and if it turns out that hopkins doesn’t work out for you, it’s a completely fixable problem and won’t be a big deal. plenty of people transfer.

good luck!
