Applied Physics?

How is the physics program at Juniata? I understand they have engineering physics, but DS is interested in applied physics. What are the opportunities there? How big is the program? What do graduates tend to do?

Thanks for any input.

Son is a prospective student and we visited for the Open House Monday.

The physics physical classrooms/labs look like the red headed step-child compared to Bio and Chem, but all this is made up for by the faculty and students. Dr. White spoke to us and we were very impressed. The major, as you may expect, at a school this size, graduates <20/year. The diversity of what the grads go on to do is wide. Lots of interesting work going on in Astro. Physics and Nuclear. Summer internship opportunities pleasantly surprised me.

I strongly encourage you to contact Dr. White directly. He was very enthusiastic and really wanted to elaborate on the department with the families.
The physics students themselves had a “meeting” room with old furniture, quirky posters and overall a club house feel. We really liked the feel.

EDIT: Didn’t want to sound like the equipment was bad - Physics lab equipment for a school this size was impressive; just the building, hall, tables are older and it is more noticeable after just comping from the Bio/Chem bldg.

Thanks, Longhaul. DS (a junior) saw some literature on Juniata and has somehow decided this is his tentative top choice. We will contact Dr. White.

We live on the west coast, and I am trying to decide whether there is sufficient reason to purchase the plane tickets for a visit. The school sounds very warm and welcoming. It’s just so far away, (and in the boondocks to boot), I’m not sure it should even be on our list. I’m really torn.

I assume your son is also a physics major? Does it sound as if many students go on to grad school?

Yes, many were going on to grad school.
