I recently applied to Vcu arts as an undergrad, in state applicant. I am really worried though, because my portfolio is not that good. My technical skills aren't terrible, but compared to my classmates, they are lacking. I can't gradually shade hardly at all, and so all of my shading is hatching and cross-hatching or gestured. I also forgot to include a self-portrait, and most of my figure studies are in black pen. I'm really worried about not getting in. However, I'm wondering about my chances because I have a good gpa (above 4.0), a lot of ap credits, and 2000-ish SATs and a lot of extracurriculars. I also wrote a really awesome essay. I'm just extremely nervous and I'm wondering if my other credentials will help my chances or if I'm simply DOOMED.

Also, has anyone been in a similar situation? How did it go? I appreciate your help and thank you for your time.

I am also a VCUarts applicant, and like you I had some doubts about my portfolio. What I struggle with the most is proportion and the beginning steps of drawings. I don’t think the portfolio reviewers are looking for perfection. They understand that there’s a reason we’re applying for art school- to get better at art. As for your other credentials, they will absolutely help you in the admissions process. I personally applied from out-of-state with a 3.84 GPA and an 1850 on my SAT. Also, as I previously stated, I included a portfolio that I didn’t feel quite measured up to that of others. But, in spite of my fears, I was accepted into VCUarts a few weeks ago. If someone like me can get in from out-of-state, then I’m sure, with your impressive credentials, that you have a good chance of being accepted. Good luck!
