Applied to YALE (SCEA). Chance Me Please?

So I was just wondering what people thought my chances at getting into Yale (SCEA) would be. Other Ivy's, too, but Yale is my top choice.

I'm a white, Jewish male and I go to school in New York at Stuyvesant High School, which is a powerhouse in terms academics and just sending kids to the Ivy's in general. We don't have a rank system and we scale our GPA out of 100. We also don't weight scores at all, so APs and honors classes are worth the same as any other class (except gym, which doesn't count at all unfortunately =P).

So here are my stats:

GPA - 95.6%
Class Rank: top 10%
Class Size: 786

Scores:

SAT I -- 2360 (Math: 800) (Critical Reading: 770) (Writing: 790)
SAT II U.S. History: 780
SAT II Math Level 2 (IIC): 800
SAT II Chemistry: 800

AP Euro (5), AP US (4), AP Language and Composition (4), AP Chemistry (5), AP French (didn't take exam)

I'm going to be taking AP Government, AP Calculus, AP English Literature and Composition, and AP Computer Science, CISCO Computer Networking, and Acting.

For extracurricular activities, I've been dancing for the past 13 years in assorted styles (ballet, ballroom, and modern). It's been a cherished part of me for a significant portion of my life, and thankfully still is. I'm the leader of my modern dance group, which is one step below the actual teacher/choreographer. I've done a lot of volunteer hours through my dance group, because we perform at various public and private events to celebrate a holiday or service, and to give the audience a good time! I think I've done well over 200 hours at these various shenanigans.

I'm also on the Speech section of the Speech and Debate Team. I've been somewhat successful, more in my junior year than anytime else, but I'd venture to say that as of this point, I've done even better as a senior (I recently won a national tournament in my category). I also help the underclassmen with accustoming themselves to the team, picking speeches, and perfecting themselves and their oratorical skills.

My last major extracurricular activity is my position on the Events Committee of our sector of the National Honor Society, ARISTA. Through it, I've been the leader of several major events and have organized for the passage of many more. With it I've had over 50 hours of volunteer hours.

In my summers, I've done many programs that have helped expand my horizons and let me dabble in various subjects, such as the Manhattan Multicultural Program, which had a focus on broadening our knowledge of the United Nations and understanding the idea of tolerance in an ever changing world. This summer, I took math classes in Advanced Problem Solving and Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry at the Macaulay Summer Honors Institute.

With all this in mind, what are my chances at getting in?

posting to bump^^^

Pretty darn good unless I miss my guess.

5% chance, just like everyone else that is not a recruit.

You have amazing stats though, but how do you get a 5 on AP Euro and 4 on US lol?

If only I knew GOPTexas… if only I knew… lol.

i’m bumping^^^

It’s not 5%, that’s the acceptance rate not probability. If applicants were admitted 100% randomly then it would be 5%.

OP I think you have a solid shot. 40% or so?

OP, who cares, there’s 4 days left. Just wait and see…

Yeah, I agree, but I can’t help but feel nervous about it, you know?

You are certainly more than qualified to do the work! But, after seeing the stats of the students who applied early at the other Ivies, nobody can be too sure of your chances :(

If you applied to Penn, you’d be in right now ahaha (not a knock on Penn, but look at the Penn decisions thread).

You look to have a good shot SCEA. I’m not happy that I’m competing with you!

Hopefully I’ll get accepted (or rejected D: but I’m trying to make myself feel better) and you won’t have to, ccuser18.

Academically, you’re definitely strong, with great SATs and good grades from a well-known school. Your extracurriculars are above average but not spectacular. They show commitment but don’t have a “wow” factor that makes them stand out from the rest of the super-competitive SCEA pool. Personally, I think your essays will probably be the tipping factor, how do you think you did on them?

Best of luck on Wednesday!!

I wrote my essays about my experiences as a male dancer, particularly as a ballet student. I talked about my stringent teacher and how she impacted me. Rereading it, I hate it, but other people have told me that they really like it. I think my second essay was pretty good, too. There was an element of humor in both, so I think that’s a definite plus. (:

25/74/1 A/D/R imho… You look a fairly excellent candidate so you will get somewhere great, even if not Y SCEA

bumpity bump

Haha, are you from NYC?

I mean, I love my school, no doubt, but when it comes to college… I’m not too thrilled that I go to Stuy. There are so many smart people here and despite what colleges say about quotas for feeder schools, our school definitely has a quota. Yale’s been accepting a pretty consistent 6,7 for EA, and very consistent 7 for RD. I don’t know how I compare with the other 60-65 EA applicants that our school has, partially because we don’t rank, but also because they’re all so amazing. D: The joys and pitfalls of going to a good school…

Maybe Yale can’t accept 20 from any one school, that seems possible. But I think the positives of coming from such a respected school will far outweigh the negatives in the admissions process.

Possibly, but loads of people here who are borderline amazing vs. amazing amazing complain about the lower chances they have because the cream of the crop is taken rather than what’s just below it. Going to a school that was even a notch lower would’ve probably meant a higher average, higher rank, and everything else that would have come with it. Idk… I’m happy with the school, most teachers are amazing (we suck at physics, though…), and even if it changes my college decision, it wouldn’t change anything… sort of. I still want to go to Yale really badly. :D
