Apply in August or wait until NMSFs are announced?

Do kids generally wait to apply to schools that give good scholarships until they find out they are a NMSF? Or can they update their application with the information?

Also, what will schools require to verify NMSF status? Or doesn’t it really matter at this point?

Thanks!

With S20 we waited till NMSF were announced and will do the same with S22. Either is fine, but I think it’s easier to include it as part of the application. That way the info doesn’t get lost. S20 notified the schools once he became NMF in February.

None of the schools asked for any proof. Many states publish their NMSF lists, and NMSC provides schools with the list too. Most of the colleges award scholarships based on NMS status not NMSF in which case the student has to name the college as their first choice. Colleges receive monthly (?) updates notifying them which students selected the school as their top choice.

My student was asked to submit proof (letter from NMSC) to two schools. Another asked for the letter if my student was going to attend and accept the award - kind of like self reporting test grades or test scores but waiting to send the transcripts until after they SIR.
