I am US resident currently studying abroad. I plan to transfer my credits to USA for fall'13. I am applying to many colleges: University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, UNC Chapell Hill, NC State, Boston University, Barnard College, Mount Holyoke, Bryn Mawr College and Mount Holyoke.

However, I have been thinking about applying to either SUNY Binghamton or SUNY Buffalo. The out of state tuition is relatively cheaper. I think I should tell you a bit about me first. My Class rank was 1 through out my High School (Class size:75). I gave my GCE exams and got 10 A's in O'levels and 4 A's in A'levels. CGPA in my current university is 3.94. Sat score is 2090 (Critical Reading: 680, Math: 720, Writing: 690). IELTS score 8.

I am passionate about photography, especially photo manipulations. I also love teaching (about 300 hours of volunteer tutoring to high school student/college level students). 60 hours community work.

I am an economics major in my current university. Cost is my first most priority followed my academics and prestige. If cost permit I would also like to do a double major in Economics and Finance instead.I would also love to be a part of beautiful campus. However, my mum and brother might move to NY city. So I would like to study somewhere where it will be easier for me to travel back to the city.

If I had to apply to only one of SUNY colleges which one do suggest? I am inclining towards Binghamton since it is better ranked. But I am also worried I might not be accepted at all. I have heard that SUNY Buffalo is prettier. More importantly, it's a little less competitive than SUNY Binghampton. But I don't think I should apply to a university just because it's less competitive (Rejection scares me big time). Academics is very important to me and I have been studious all my life. I will move in to USA for the first time this fall and I am pretty sure I won't be much of party girl. If I had to apply to only one SUNY university, which SUNY do you think will be best fit for me?

I just have a day to send my dad my final list of universities. Your help will be sincerely appreciated. Thank you in advance.

SUNY Binghamton is a pretty campus, but smaller than SUNY Buffalo (which actually has two campuses with a bus between each) There are busses which leave SUNY Binghamton to NYC and LI many weekends for students to travel home. If cost is not an issue, apply to both…but I would choose SUNY Binghamton, if I had to pick one. SUNY Binghamton is closer to Ivy stats than SUNY Buffalo and they have good alumni network and internship opportunities for your major. Buffalo may have the same, but I can only speak for SUNY Binghamton.

Thank you for your reply,marybee333!Do you think it will be a difficult to find a fit in SUNY Binghamton? I am rather shy and very nerdy. I am an amateur photographer. So it would be great if I can find students with the same interest as me.

There are tons of nerdy smart types at both schools. Both have large Asian population of students and both seemed to have many serious and smart students. Buffalo is a great city to photograph and has lots of artsy type activities and a world class modern art museum, as well as lots of other colleges, but the campus is not actually in the downtown area. Binghamton is a much smaller city and the campus is much smaller and set on the side of a hill, overlooking the city. We have visited both, so I guess it depends on where you will feel more at home. Binghamton is quite a bit closer to NYC and with the bus travel from there, it might be a better fit for you. I think you have a great shot of getting in either.

Once again, thank you for your quick reply. I want to apply to a SUNY university mainly because my family will be closer. I think Binghamton makes more sense. I wish I could visit schools before I applied. But I also plan to take summer courses in my current university. So it’s impossible. Thank you for your support. I really appreciate it.

Why not both? The app fee is not that high, and you can use the SUNY app which goes to Albany anyways to be processed. There are advantages to either school.

@caemin - Thanks. It’s nice to know that I might be able to find a fit in a university like Binghamton. @oldmom4896 - 8 hours? Wow. I think I will apply to Binghamton, after all. @cptofthehouse - Well, I could have applied to more universities. I told my dad that transfer get very few scholarships. He seems less interested in spending so much money just for applications. He thinks there is a possibility that I might have to complete my undergraduates back home at the end of the day. So he told me to come up with a shorter list.
