Applying as a ninth grade repeat

I was wondering if you had any advantage of applying as a ninth grade repeat. Would the admissions officer give you a little leeway, would it be easier to get in etc.

BBlife, I think in a lot of cases, there are more 9th grade spots. It probably depends on the school. I know people who have applied to different grades based on the school. Personally, I hate the repeating trend. We have freshmen who are 13 and freshmen who are 16 in the same class, so the 13’s look tiny and then everyone thinks they should repeat because they are so small in comparison. Despite being the best students in the class.

In my case it is a little different. I am the youngest in my grade of 250 kids so repeating 9th would put me at a normal age for the class of 2016. Also I was wondering if you thought that it is easier to get in repeating. Thanks for the reply!

“Easier” compared to what?

Yes, it might be easier to get in as a 9th grader rather than as a 10th grader because more 9th graders are admitted, and the school has a bit more flexibility in whom they admit.

But if you’re asking if you’d somehow get preferential treatment as a 9th grade repeat, as compared to any other 9th grade applicant, then the answer is no. You’d be held to the same standard as all other 9th grade applicants.

If your concern is that your grades or scores might not be good enough to get you in as a 10th grader, then applying as a 9th grader isn’t going to help.

I’m the youngest in my grade also. A “normal” age probably used to be your age before all the parents read Outliers.

You are funny, chukkerhead!
