Applying CS with Bs in math and physics

Echoing the question about why NYC is a “pipe dream”? Do you just mean Columbia and NYU specifically, though neither were on your original list above? There are over 200 colleges in the NYC metro area, the largest concentration in the country serving over 1 million college students. They vary from very, very safe to lottery hard. You essentially could guarantee your ability to go to college in NYC, at an equivalent cost to some of the others on your list, if that was your goal. As one of but many examples, Fordham will likely give you significant merit because of your National Merit Semifinalist status.

I wouldn’t let the B’s throw your confidence. Overall your full picture is enough to get you in the “consider” column for highly selective schools. And that’s all any candidate can initially hope for. To be clear, most students in that category don’t ultimately get offers, but it probably would not just be the exceptional B’s that make or break your application in the end.

‘Shotgunning all the UC’s’ at $80 each application will run you $720. Are you sure you’d be happy at any of the campuses?

The OOS tuition costs for the UC’s are running at $80k year, if budget is important many or most of these may be out for you.

I get it. When I was a senior in high school, NYC was my dream for college, too. I had a fairly limited budget and solid, but not top, grades. I ended up at Fordham with a nice merit scholarship and work study and had a fantastic four years. So NYC is more than NYU.
