Applying Early Action, 9th grade Suspension

My HS senior is applying EA to a competitive in-state university. Has a freshman out of school suspension/technical expulsion served as suspension in-school, for hiding marijuana for another student, which was confirmed by owner of the substance once caught. Has worked hard to regain trust of admin, teachers, peers; very strong academically, strong SAT's, ACT, genuine community service activity/interest and leadership though those are not considered in EA apps. Will be getting strong positive GC rec. Must answer Discipline Q and is answering Yes, taking responsibility and outlining what has been learned, knowing this will red-flag the application for Admissions per Univ FAQ. GC has indicated they will allay any Univ concerns if contacted and will not disclose entire disciplinary record per school policy. Nothing in transcript shows any of this nor does iniitial GC rec form contain any disciplinary info. So disclosure is purely on an honesty basis.

Q here is degree of detail to provide in student's answer. Is it bettter to outline every detail or to simply say suspension Freshman year for non-academic violation of code of conduct? The Univ of course wants details but is it better to word it such that they contact the GC to get that good recommendation vs just setting this student aside on first pass?

I am not a college rep, but if I had read “suspension freshman year for non-academic violation of code of conduct” first, my head would begin to wonder how bad the violation was. When I read that it was for hiding marijuana for another student, confirmed by the owner of the substance – I was relieved. That is the kind of dumb thing that young teenagers sometimes do, and it sounds like, from your email, that your child has learned from this and worked very hard since. So in this case, I am more inclined for more disclosure about the “facts” of the case.
