Is there any problem or downside with having my son (football player) apply Early Decision to one school and Early Action at another? The deadline for both of these schools is the same date.

We understand that if he were to get into both schools he would need to go to the ED school (as long as the financial part worked out).

My feeling is that it would give my son a backup plan in case the ED school did not accept him.

Are both schools D3?
Is it EA or restricted Single Choice EA?
Does ED school have any restrictions on applying to other schools ED/EA?
Are you promised coach’s support (slot/tip) in exchange for commitment to his program or this is a pure walk-on scenario?

As long as the EA school is not restricted (single choice EA) then you can apply both ED and EA. No downside as long as the ED school is the student’s clear first choice. If he’s applying ED because he’s being pressured to do so by the coach, and it’s not the student’s clear first choice, then he should apply to that school as RD instead.

This really depends on the amount of coach support and if the same support is available during RD.

Supposedly peer schools exchange lists of students admitted under early programs and you may get in trouble. But ED to Fancy private and EA to State University should be ok.
