I'm a bit neurotic, and I'm afraid I may not get into the schools that I really want to get into. Is it frowned upon to apply to one school early decision and one or two schools early action?

Well as long as you follow the contract of your Early Decision agreement, you should be fine. Generally, if you get accepted, you should withdraw your applications from your Early Action schools.

So, if I don’t get into the school that I apply early decision to (heaven forbid), it would be okay to have those two early action schools?

There’s nothing frowned upon about it, just don’t violate each schools’ EA and ED policies, as some of them limit what you can do at other schools in terms of application period. Also, have a single top choice in mind so that if you get in, you can withdraw your other apps or at least request to change to RD.

As long as it’s permitted by the school’s ED/EA policies. If they’re restricted, then no.

You will need to read the specific language for the school(s) you are considering to see what is permitted and what is not. For example, the school my S applied ED to said:

Another school my S was considering (if he was not admitted ED) gave best scholarship consideration for EA applicants. We called the ED school and asked if he would be permitted to apply EA to the other school. They said it was fine.
