Applying ED, when will i get FA package?

So i plan to apply ED to Cornell. My question is if i get accepted, when will i get my financial package? Do i at least get a rough estimate when they admit me (assuming they do of course for questions sake). My EFC is near zero so i need a ton of aid. Cornell claims to meet 100% need so ive been told that my need would be covered. Any help?

Cornell will determine you family contribution…and it might not be what the FAFSA EFC is.

You need to do the Net price Calculator on the Cornell website. Your estimated FAFSA EFC really means nothing in terms of how they award institutional aid (their money). You also need to check the Cornell financial aid webpage. It is very likely that they have an early priority deadline for fili g the Profile which they also require for financial aid consideration. You will need to get this done ON TIME with excellent estimates for the full 2013 tax year.

Keep in mid that if your family has self employed parents, that FAFSA EFC might end up being much lower than what the Profile info determines your family contribution to be. Also, if your parents are divorced, only your custodial parent reports on the FAFSA. For the profile…the custodial parent and spouse do the profile, and the non-custodial parent and spouse do the Noncustodial parent profile.

To answer your question…assuming every bit of required material is submitted for financial aid consideration ON TIME…you should get an ESTIMATED financial aid package either with or very shortly after you receive you ED acceptance.

Am i better off ED? Cuz decision is released december 15th and deadline for most unis is dec 31st or jan 1st. Also i did run the NPC and i got about $48000 need bas

Need based aid. However my dad makes 15k yet is self employed. How would this affect me? He has a small amount of land (wouldnt really call it a farm) in which he sells milk from cows he owns.

It depends. If your dad’s gross income is a lot higher and he has lots of deductions that bring down his income to $15k then the schools may determine a higher contribution.

Is $15k his “net income”? The amount that your family lives on?

Is your home paid for or do you have a mortgage?

NPCs don’t work well for those who are self employed.

Also, the land has value and maybe the cows do too? Not sure how that all works.

Well, over here, there are no deductions. Gross=net. $15k is a little high too. My dad claims $15k but i did the math, theres no way. More like $10k-13k. And we have our own house. Its not worth as much as US homes. You see, there is a lot of open land over here, so houses are cheap. The land used for the buisness is on rent, and i guess the cows have some value.

Are you an international?

I live in pakistan, but am a us citizen, so i apply as a domestic

Here is the Cornell Net Price calculator
Unknown Address;

I already took that, as mentioned before, i was getting approx. $48000. However, many have mentioned that under my circumstances, it might differ.

Cornell meets 100% need, wont they meet mine?

And the focus of this thread actually was when i should expect an estimated package if admitted on december 15th.

Cornell meets 100% of need. They determine your need, not you. Based on the financial info you provide, they may determine your need to be less than you do. You can apply and see what they determine your family contribution to be. Whether someone who needs a lot of aid should apply ED is a topic of frequent debate here on CC.

Thats what im afraid of.

In addition to applying ED to Cornell, you should also apply to a couple Rolling Admission places that offer good guaranteed merit-based aid. Check the threads on guaranteed merit aid at the top of this forum for reasonably up-to-date information on that topic. You also should prepare (but you don’t have to submit) your RD applications. That way if you are admitted at Cornell but the package is unaffordable, you can let Cornell know that, ask for release from the ED agreement, and quickly submit your RD applications elsewhere - unless of course the Rolling Admissions institutions with guaranteed aid are good enough and cheap enough for you, in which case you would be done with the whole thing.

Wishing you all the best!

I checked that. Problem is, i study under the GCE system, meaning we dont use GPA. How would i know if im eligible for those scholarships.

I will obviously have my RD apps ready and will submit them right away if i get rejected by Cornell (most likely).

Does anyone have any experience with this btw. Getting accepted from Cornell ED?

The concern is, of course i can let go of the bind if the FA package isnt sufficient. But the time period between the decision and RD deadline is two weeks. If my FA estimate comes after jan 1st and i cant afford it, im pretty much screwed arent i?

Btw, if cornell wont meet my need, then what college will? Cornell is one of the most generous no?

Email the colleges and universities in the scholarship threads, and ask them how they treat US citizen applicants who have been educated outside the US in the GCE system. They will tell you.

If you do not get an estimate of FA with the ED acceptance, then submit the other applications, and tell Cornell that you need an extension of time on making your decision until you have seen their offer. They do this stuff every year.

Lots of places might meet your full need. Some because they are as rich as/richer than Cornell, some because they want Cornell-quality students to beef up their admissions stats, some because they just happen to like you more than someone else. You really won’t know what your offers are until you have them all on the table. And you need to remember that what one place uses to meet 100% of what they think your need is and what another place uses to meet 100% of what that place thinks your need is can be two very, very different things.

Are you sure i can do that? They say you must rescind all other applications if accepted. Should i email them and ask if they would do that? (Again, assuming i get accepted)

Of course you can ask for an extension while you wait for the aid package! You can’t make a decision until you have that aid package. And, you can continue to receive extensions while you have them reconsider an aid package that they have awarded but isn’t quite good enough for you if you feel that they haven’t properly interpreted some of the figures that you have submitted (or if there has been a substantial change in your financial situation).

You do not need to rescind your other applications until you have determined that the ED financial aid package is adequate for your situation, and that you will not need to ask to be released from the ED agreement.

But, to be perfectly honest, it looks to me like you have serious financial issues, and you might want to reconsider the whole ED thing. It may make more sense for you to apply to a number of places RD and Rolling so that you can compare the aid packages side by side.

I don’t think you will Ned to wait very long to get a financial aid award after an ED acceptance at Cornell. The MOST important thing to do is check the financial aid website for the requirements for applying ED for financial aid…and then do NOT miss those deadlines by even a second.

I will say…I do agree with Happymom…you might want to consider applying to schools regular decision so that you can compare financial aid awards.

I thought about that. But honestly, my chances to Cornell will probably drop to practically zero if i apply RD. Cornell admit rate for ED is double the RD rate. They say they reserve a third of the college for ED applicants.

I figured if anyone was gonna meet my aid, then it would be Cornell. I will look into some schools with rolling admission though.

However, if happymom is correct and i can ask for extensions, then why not apply ED. I will look into it.

Right now, my stats can greatly fluctuate. I will get an accurate idea after i talk to my counselor, for ex, my approx gpa could be anywhere from a 3.4-3.9

Thanks for the help guys

You do not have to rescind your RD and rolling admissions until AFTER you receive and accept your FA offer.

Send your RD offers out after acceptance or BEFORE (if you want merit consideration).

*You also should prepare (but you don’t have to submit) your RD applications. *

If you want merit consideration at the schools that give the best merit, those apps should go out in October because many have early scholarship deadlines or priority awards (money runs out for later applicants).

Many ED students make the mistake of not applying to other schools until they see their ED results. Then they find out that they’re too late for many scholarships.
