Hi, I'm new here. I have what is I'm sure a very basic question, but I'm not easily finding the answer on this forum, nor elsewhere online. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

My daughter is currently in 7th grade at a wonderful private day school. There's a chance she'll want to apply to boarding school but I'm not sure what to tell her about applying as a freshman vs a sophomore.

Is my personal experience no longer the reality? I went to Farmington and started in 9th grade but there were very few girls in my class. Most girls started as sophomores. Now I hear that most kids start boarding school as 9th graders. Is this true? Does it depend on the school?

Actually, the trend has reversed from your experience. It used to be the exception at most schools for a student to arrive after 9th grade. Now, most BS’ have a substantial number of new students in 10th, although the majority still come in 9th. Your D will grow up a lot in the next year, so I think you really need to see how she is next year. There are a lot of issues to consider, not least of which is the ability to make a fairly smooth curriculum transition when changing schools which is often easier in 9th than 10th. However, as I said, it is probably too soon for you to know what is best.

Thanks so much for your reply. You’re quite right that there are a number of factors to be considered. Luckily, we have plenty of time to make the decision.

Hi, I am currently in 8th grade and I am staying for 9th grade at my private school. My school goes from pre-primary (don’t ask) to 9th. I am planing on going to boarding school too. I am planing on repeating 9th grade into boarding school. I am not repeating because I am unintelligent, I have 93 SSAT(not national!!!) and high honors. Repeating 9th grade will give me the benefits of a high school year at home and the ability to grow even further mentally and emotionally. Starting as a Freshman in Boarding school will give me the advantages of the support the schools give you in the begging! I hope you can find the right thing to do with your daughter and that she will find the school of her dreams, the best of luck!!!

P.S. My sister is a current junior at MPS and she is 6th generation!!! all mother and daughters!!! She loves it! My sister stayed for 9th grade at my school, she has wonderful grades, 1st boat crew, and has schools (such as Harvard and MIT) asking to recruit her)!!! Again I hope your daughter will find the school that is right for her, and that you all find what will be the best for her

I would strongly recommend against coming to Hotchkiss as a sophomore; you have to deal with all the same graduation requirements, but with one less year in which to complete them, leaving less time for electives.
