Hi all! I apol in advance if a thread of this nature has already been created, I’m still getting used to college confidential! Anyway, I’m a 9th grade student currently attending a public school in Baltimore. I have been pretty dissatisfied thus far, and I’ve been researching alternatives. Despite its cost (plus my parents are still unconvinced), boarding school seems like it would be a good option for me. Does anyone know what the chances are for a student applying for 10th grade? Are they better or worse than for those applying for 9th? Any advice on how to convince my parents or anything else at all would be greatly appreciated:)
*apologize! also sheesh please ask me if you need any clarification as that is not well written ?

Because most schools start at 9th, that tends to be the easiest admit. With that said, some schools take a number of 10th graders. This really varies by school.
It’s not unusual for kids to repeat 9th when they go to BS although that’s not by any means a necessity.
There have been a number of threads on “why bs?” In this forum, including ones in the parent section on how parents have explained BS to friends that could be a good place to start on ideas for convincing them. You still have time, but not a lot, for doing applications this year.
I currently attend a boarding school in CT, and I was a new sophomore! I had no issues with the transition. I went to a junior boarding school before, so it ended in 9th grade. Some of my classmates repeated, but the vast majority went to new schools as sophomores. There were about 45 of us, and none of us experienced issues of admission as 10th graders. Statistically, there are less slots, but you should not worry. The sophomore class at my school, for example, gets ~60 new students, so it gets about a third larger. Plenty of space for new students like you! Don’t worry at all
