Applying for financial aid after the first year?

I know schools are mostly need-sensitive for international students, so I didn't apply for any so as to protect my chances, but assuming I qualify, it is common for international students to apply for aid in their second year?

Most colleges will not give financial aid to students (especially international students) who did not apply for aid at the time of admission. For example, here is Carleton’s policy:

barum is correct: most schools don’t offer aid if you don’t apply for it as a freshman to protect themselves from exactly what you’re thinking of doing!

Impero,

If you cannot afford all four years at Carleton without financial aid, you need to take a gap year, make a new list, and apply to places that are either affordable without financial aid, or that are likely to give you the financial aid that you will need. There is no point whatsoever in attending Carleton for one or two years, running out of money, and having to leave without completing your degree.
