May a student apply for need-based financial aid on his/her sophomore year?

Financial aid isn't need-blind for international students in most colleges, so an applicant could hurt his chances of admission by applying for financial aid. Could a student apply for financial aid for his second year of college if he didn't apply for it as a prospective freshman though?

Thank you for your help!

It depends on the school. International students are only receiving institutional aid (not U.S. federal dollars). Some schools will not award institutional aid in subsequent years IF the student did not apply for it as a freshman. The schools both of my kids attended had that policy.

“It depends on the school.” I would go as far as to say that almost ALL need-aware schools will not offer FA in subsequent years if the international student does not apply in the first year.

Check with your school. But most schools are quite specific that for international students you cannot apply for aid in subsequent years if you have initially said you are not applying for aid.

Okay, thank you very much!

I don’t think it’s just for international students. Unless your financial situation has changed after you enrolled at the school, the school wouldn’t consider giving you FA. Each school has $X amt set aside for each class, for less endowed school it’s really not an option to give more students FA.

You are not the first one to try to game the system, and most schools are smart enough to close that loop.
