Applying for the OUAC

Yeah I understand. What confused me is that you’re saying that medicine is competitive and stuff, but all I’m still looking pre-med, or any major that qualifies for medicine in the future. (So, I am still an undergraduate ) I am not sure if you also meant that they admit few international students for undergraduate programs related to health and science.

So, if I have a full GPA, and my SAT score is 1460/1600, and SAT subject tests (Math I: 780, Biology: 800), I am not competitive enough?

You are competitive enough for the undergraduate programs.

However, you should consider 1) It is very difficult to get a high enough GPA at Ontario universities that you would make you competitive for a Canadian or American medical school and 2) It is much more difficult for an international student to gain admission to medical school in Canada or the US than it is for a Canadian or American for whom it is already extremely difficult.

Ok thank you so much. I will keep that in mind. Now I need a last advice: if I want to apply to a life sciences, health sciences, or biological science program, which universities are best for me?

You should know that when applying to medical programs in Canada, unlike in the US, there is no such thing as a pre-med undergraduate program. You can get accepted to medical school from any undergraduate program provided you meet the criteria with regards to GPA, MCAT scores, solid extracurriculars and the rest of the requirements. You don’t even have to do a science degree. You can get into med school after studying history or English. Also the university you attend prior to applying to med school also does not matter. Med schools here do not rank the universities being applied from so no preference is given to graduates from one school over another. The other posters are correct that your chance of landing a spot in a Canadian medical school as an international student is very very slim. Having said that the key will be to get as a high of a GPA as you can and that may not be at the top schools that are generally highly competitive for the majority of their programs. Find a program you’re genuinely interested in and a school you like and stick with that.

If you still want to consider life/med sci type programs the most highly regarded ones are those from U of T, McMaster, and Western (UWO). While it is true that McMaster’s Health Sci program sends a higher percentage to medical school (everyone claims that the program practices grade inflation) you should know that it is a highly competitive program to get into.
