So, I am going to apply for the OUAC. Because it’s very expensive to apply for only 3 programs, I would like advice on the universities and/or programs I should choose. I want a health major, biology, or anything that qualifies me for Medicine in postgraduate studies. Right now I chose two programs at U of T (Life Science and Psychology and Health Studies), and one program at York (Biomedical Science). I don’t know if my choices are right, the universities are good, and if I have a decent chance of being accepted that won’t make my spent money feel useless. I got 1460 in the New SAT and took 2 subject tests. My GPA is pretty high…so any help??
up
.
anyone??
There’s only a handful of us that answer on this forum, so you need patience.
Are you applying to two different campuses at U of T? You can’t apply to two different programs in Arts and Science at the St George campus.
Instead of York, I would look at McMaster Health Sciences. It has a high rate of getting students into med school.
Thanks, but does McMaster have a good acceptance rate for my scores? And does it have scholarships for international students? U of T Mississauga and U of T Scarborough are the campuses I chose.
Are you American or overseas? If your dream school is Duke, as your screen name suggests, be aware that UToronto Scarborough and Mississauga are really branch campuses with mostly commuter students.
check the premed programs - health science or something at Queen’s and UWO (Western).
@TomSrOfBoston haha that was like last year or something, and I guess I can’t change the username. I am not American, but I take the American curriculum overseas.
@moneyp I will. I just don’t want to apply to too many programs in different universities because I won’t be able to pay that much money for admission only, you get me?
As an international, I would not recommend applying to the Mississauga or Scarborough campuses of U of T.
The Health Sciences program at McMaster is extremely competitive for admissions.
Where do you intend to study medicine? MD programs are extremely competitive in Ontario and most spots are given to Ontario residents. You would not qualify for those spots.
You should also be aware that Ontario university GPAs tend to be lower than those in comparable universities in the US.
agree with bouders regarding lower gpas and those lower gpas may be a liability for med school applications.
@bouders I just want some kind of pre-med for my undergraduate studies. Something to qualify me for medicine in the future…is medicine that competitive in all developed countries?
Is it also hard to apply to majors such as neurology or genetics…maybe biomedical science as an international student ?
Medical school is particularly competitive in Canada and the US. In the US, there’s 40 applications per medical seat. In Ontario, there’s 21 applications per medical school seat. Public universities in the US and Canada give preference to residents. All medical schools in Canada are public. A quick glance at requirements show that at least one Ontario university gives preference to students who are residents of the counties close to the med school. http://www.macleans.ca/education/medical-school-in-canada-what-does-it-take-to-get-in/

Neurology is a medical specialty, not an undergrad major.
Thanks about that… I found some programs in several universities for undergraduates called neurology.
Are you sure that they are not called neuroscience? Quite different.
Hmm I’ve to get back to that…how are they different though?
@bouders I just have a question, are the applications competitive for undergrads and grads or only for grads?
@iwannagoduke I don’t understand your question. Medical school is a graduate level program.
