We are confused as to the number of recommenders needed ... Can each teacher/counselor only recommend for a few apps?

If my daughter has 15 schools, one academic-area teacher, one arts teacher, and one guidance counselor ... can the three of them recommend for all 15 schools on the common app?

We are confused, so any advice is appreciated!

Trying to figure out whether the teachers and counselors are limited to a certain number of recommendations. Or, if they can each recommend for all 15.

The real question is why would one want to apply to 15 schools.

Any well-informed and judicious applicant should be able to put together a list of no more than 10 schools, thus easing worries about gathering recs, etc.

As long as students keep applying to so many schools, college admissions madness will persist.

My college counselor recommends me to ask the teachers to write a general letter of recommendation and forward it to the counselor. That way, she can upload the letters up online and send it to all the schools on my list.
However, there’s a problem with that. These letters are general, so they’re not really the ideal letters for the highly competitive colleges.

Thank you, myButler. I will check with the GC to see if there is a way to do this. My D’s probably do need to be more specialized, though :-(

gondaline, not sure why this type of reply. 15 was a slightly high number, but still could be the case. We currently stand at 12-14. The reasons for this include: financial aid uncertainty, the type of program to which she is applying (I’ve been told repeatedly on focused boards for her major that “she needs to cast a wide net”), and really, just the hope she will eventually have a couple of choices. Because this is our first child going to college, we don’t know what we don’t know. So we are here asking questions to become “well informed and judicious”.

If anyone has already submitted the common app and has been able to assign recommenders to 12-14 schools, I would still appreciate your advice on how to do that.

The number of recommenders would depend on how many of the schools on CommonApp and how many letters each teacher agrees to write. For schools on CommonApp, you can use the same pool of recommendations for all schools (depending on the number allowed by each school) and each teacher only needs to write once and upload to CommonApp. You can assign the same recommender(s) to all schools. One of my D’s teacher only agree to write upto 3 letters for her. Fortunately, she has 4 schools on CommonApp and only 1 other school not on CommonApp requires recommendation (2 other do not want recommendation at all).
Applying to 15 schools is not that uncommon these days, particularly for students aiming very high at the schools with single digit acceptance rate. Although college application is not a lotto, it works like that in some cases even when you have above the admission average credential.
