Like if you are awful at math, but you apply to the Communications or English major, instead of undecided, increase your chances of admission to the college?

It depends, but it’s never really a good idea.

In a lot of schools, you don’t have a declared major freshman year. So the intended major you put on your application doesn’t really mean anything, and thus won’t significantly affect your chances.

Now, there are some schools where you DO declare your major before entering, and in those cases applying for an unpopular major will improve your chances. But the problem is, at such schools there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to switch majors. So don’t apply for a major you don’t really want just to increase your chances of getting in, because you might end up stuck in that major.
