Applying to Grad School Psychology counseling w Business Degree

Hello,

I have a bachelors degree in Major: Marketing and Minor: Finance. I would like to go to Graduate School to become a Clinical Therapist. I took Statistics class and 1 class in Psychology I as an elective while an undergrad. I graduated Cum Laude.

I am very confused: do I have to take undergraduate psychology classes to get into grad school or is there graduate school classes I can take that would prepare me to get admitted into a Grad School? Is there any programs that help undergrads with unrelated degrees get into Psychology Grad Schools, namely Clinical Therapist?

Any help would be welcomed -thanks! deb

Every program is a bit different, but most likely you would have to take undergraduate psychology courses in order to get admitted into a PhD program in clinical psychology.

My university (Columbia University) does, in fact, have a program like that. It’s called the postbaccalaureate program in psychology. Students are typically career changers who did not major in psychology in undergrad, but want to attend clinical or counseling psychology PhD programs (and occasionally other kinds of psych programs too). It allows them to take the required undergraduate prerequisites for 1-2 years as well as getting some research experience with professors, which is also required to get into PhD programs. Our program is quite expensive, though; an alternative is to take the same classes at a local public university and get involved in research with professors near you.

Another alternative is to get a master’s in social work (MSW) and become licensed as a clinical social worker. There’s no required major to do that, although social science majors are overrepresented in the field.
