As a lot of the people applying to stern (and nyu in general) are asian, I am applying ED, and was wondering if I should put down that I am Chinese. I heard that they have a sort of "unofficial" quota system for different ethnicities so that if I put down that I am asian, I will be competing with other asians (which I will probably lose at since I am not your typical asian).

It's up to you. If you're like many people of Chinese descent, your last name alone could give it away.

well, my roommates in stern and she's korean. i asked her about the asian question, and she said that Stern in overwhelmingly Asian... about 85%. i don't think not putting a race down is going to affect your chances at all, because i heard that most admission boards just assume that you're asian if you put "no answer." how are you not a "typical asain." post your stats.

by not a "typical asian", I mean that I don't not have stellar grades, with A+'s since freshman year. I currently have a 3.7(uw) gpa, and a 4.1(w). I also have a 1490/2130 SAT. There is an upward trend since 9th grade, which I hope that admissions counselors will see.

Stern is overwhelmingly Asian: LOL. I hope your friend was joking, because otherwise her estimation skills are awful - don't let her make snap judgments about money, that's for sure! Stern is probably about 1/3 Asian. The number is less than 1/2, for sure.

Honestly, your SAT score is just too low. Ideally, you'd be around 750 on all three sections. 700 is probably good enough, but it seems like your average is 500, which is simply too low. Try and get it up and that will significantly improve the strength of your application.

....SAT's are NOT LOW. read carefully...1490/2130
those are pretty good

No, that's old scale/new scale on the SAT. 2130 is 700+ on each section.

Oops, my fault. SATs look just fine, then. :P

I wish people would just post the new scale - what's the point of posting just the old scale these days? It would make things easier for us geezers who remember when the SAT was out of 1600 and the Writing was an SAT II.

I doubt they have a quota, because although I'm sure Stern is not 85% Asian, it does have a giant Asian population that rivals Berkeley's, and Berkeley is known to not have a quota (I think).

But like someone else said, since you're Chinese, your name will give it away, unless if you have a really weird name, like mine. Even mine would probably give it away if someone knew Chinese.

dont apply ED. you get horrible finaid. and no chance at stern scholar.

well the thing is that i'm in love with nyu, and i would go to it no matter how much it costs (even if it means that i have to take out a bunch of loans). that's why i'm trying to have the best chance possible by applying ED as I feel as if I would be lucky to get in.

and yeah, i guess my last name would give it away, but maybe if i don't answer they'll have a little doubt? or would they automatically assume that i'm chinese?
