I was wondering if it would be wise to submit a paper with my application in order to increase my chances of getting in. I will be submitting the same paper I am submitting for NYU's Cinema Studies Portfolio (5-10 page paper on a film, director, etc.) and was wondering if I should submit it to Wesleyan as well.

Also, how hard is it to get into Wesleyan's Film Studies program? Do they focus more on portfolios or more on GPAs and SAT scores? Also, how crazy expensive is it to go there? Thanks for the help.

You don’t apply to the Film Studies program right away - it’s not separate. You apply to get into Wesleyan, and then you declare your major in the spring of your sophomore year like most of the other majors. For the film major, you have to get a B+ or better in two gateway courses sometime during your first three semesters and complete an application. Therefore, while a paper may help you get into Wesleyan, it won’t affect your chances of getting into the film major, unless you somehow include it when applying for the major in sophomore year.

Wesleyan is expensive, tuition + fees runs ~$56,000. However, Wesleyan is one of only a few dozen schools in the country that is need-blind and full-need - Wesleyan does not look at your ability to pay during admission, and offers substantial financial aid, including no loans if income is <$40,000 and offers aid even up to incomes of $270,000 (so don’t let the high tuition scare you).

Okay, thanks a lot.

I ask if the essay would help because I am going to have my AA when I graduate high school so I would immediately need to go into the film program. Would that be a problem?

You have to define AA; for some people that could indicate anything from an Associates degree from a community college, to a college’s affirmative action program. :)

An associates degree from a community college is what I am referring to. It is actually not a community college anymore, but it was a few years ago. As long as I have been going to it, it has been a state college.

Did you actually attend the college? Or were you just taking classes through your high school?

From Wesleyan’s site:

I would call to confirm, especially if you have an AA but are still in high school.

Okay, I will call.

My high school is actually connected to the college. They have like four high school teachers for any classes you may need, but for the most part, it is entirely run through the college itself.
