appointment update

do you think not hearing anything is good at this point. I am wondering if they just release the pool all at once!

I wouldn't want anyone to have false hopes or anything like that, but from the AIM process to the appointment process, we never got anything, either by phone or in the mail, in the time frame that was outlined for us.

If I were a candidate still waiting to hear and hasn't been told that the process is over, I would be emailing my AO pretty much daily to tell them how much I wanted to be there, what I would offer, how hard I was continuing to work in school to learn as much as possible before going to the academy, or even calling if I felt like I could get my point across better.

Obviously having kids who REALLY, REALLY want to be there is of utmost importance, and I think that is how you show it when you start getting down to the final days. I don't think during the earlier part of the process it was a good idea to bug anyone, but time is starting to run out and if they are down to the last few candidates, I would certainly want my name popping up as often as possible. This is obviously just my opinion, but that is the advice I would be giving my s/d at this point in the process.

thanks for the advice, but if i wasnt REALLY, REALLY wanting to be there out of utmost importance.............i would have told the admissions people to jam it a long time ago for treating us with such little respect. especially compared to the way i am getting treated by my backup choices, who are bending over backward while i wait on cga.
you are also right in your first paragraph when you talk about the entire process. i went to aim and have met every deadline set for me, BUT the cga hasnt met one yet coming back. USNA, NROTC, and Army ROTC all met their deadlines. funny but i still want cga more than any.

Same thing happened to our son bman....Navy ROTC and USNA and USMMA all treated us promptly and kept us informed. Guess CGA has a different approach. Also, I think this past year acceptance to AIM had no effect on an actual application to CGA. Maybe it is because applications to all the academies are up.

My S approached to this process was somewhat laid back. Up until March 15th or so he provided the AO with his most recent accomplishments. Then he figured they had all the information on all the candidates to make the decision.

I am still confused at the process... It appears that the review board does not make the final decision. There is the processing group which seems to make the final decision. So the question is after the review board give you a score how does the processing group determine who gets an appoint.

Is this where the process get political. Do they then take into consideration things such as:
State you are from
Race
gender

I would think that the review board would give the candidate a score and from that score the appointments would come. Giving an appointment to the highest score and so on..............

Also I an confused at the AO role in all of this, do they push candidates?

Over the last several days my S has asked direct questions and received scripted answers.

I think I should clarify my points above because I think they were not understood the way I meant them. As far as receiving things from the CGA in a timely manner, you can see with the kids who are now receiving their AIM letters, some received them as early as the 12th and others just received them yesterday. I personally talked to someone yesterday who just got his AIM letter yesterday, on the 17th. It was mailed the same as the others, but took that long to get to him. That is what happened to us when waiting for the AIM letter. We did not get the letter in the time frame that others did, although in the final analysis, it just took forever to get here.

As far as the appointment goes, we all know people have until the 1st to say yea or nay, and then I expect they hand out another set of appointments, and those people have a week to respond, and then they hand out more appointments and those people have a week to respond, and it just gets whittled down through the month of May. How agonizing for all of you who are alternates.

If they still have availability for appointments and they just close the process now so those who are waiting can have their minds eased and go to Plan B, is that what most alternates want at this point? Or would you rather wait? I don't want to minimize the emotions out there for anyone who is waiting. I know it must be just agonizing day after day as I mentioned above. I wish there was something that could be said to make it all turn out well for everyone.

Oh, I forgot something I wanted to say. When I talked about contacting the admissions officer for your S/D, I said that because while they are whittling down at this time of year and there are so few appointments left, don't you think if they have someone who keeps contacting them, they would be more apt to consider him/her at this point because they know if they offer them an appointment now, they aren't going to have to wait a week and then have the kid say "no." They KNOW they are going to say yes. That is why I offered that opinion and advice.

Thanks for responding you advice is helpful.
Somewhere along the line I have loss the concept of the process. When my S was 1st placed into the pool an AO told him he was high in the pool. A second call several month later to a processing person revealed the same answer. It had sound so encouraging........and then the wait........ Then came email saying the pool is not ranked.........So he hangs on waiting. When the final notice come I hope to at least understand the process.

I hear ya..that is confusing, and frustrating to say the least.

I think it would be really helpful for kids to know if the email asking them if they were still interested was sent to just a small pool of kids or to every alternate.

I remember last year when we got that email asking if he would accept an appointment if offered, we were convinced that that meant he was going to get in...and then the wait as you describe...gosh, it was like 10+ days, although it felt like months. I think the whole family lost weight during that time because of the daily agonizing...

I know you mentioned this before, Longrun, but doesn't it seem really odd that not one kid has been on this board or the other main service academy forum to say they have gotten an appointment since before May 1? I mean, am I wrong about that? You would think if there was someone who was on the alternate list and they had gotten an appointment that they were going to accept, wouldn't you think there would be ONE at least??? I just don't get it. Am I right about that??

Nobody posted but I know of a kid who got an appointment off the alternate list a week or so ago...no not mine...haha but another CT kid.

I would think that as of today, May 18th, there are no more appointments left. (just a hunch, no proof or evidence. There MAY be a FEW left, but not as many that would inspire any hope, imho).

It may be better to go to "plan B", accepting another offer. IF by slim chance the USCGA does come up with an appointment for you, consider it a stroke of GREAT LUCK.

You're probably right, Luigi...it's just hard to think that some of these kids on the board who have worked so hard are not going to get an appointment this year. Just kind of heartwrenching...

..yea

im still waiting and still hanging in there...

Well, Colby, since this is from the CGA website:

Rolling Admissions
Files for applicants who are not eligible for Early Action are reviewed under the regular rolling admissions process that begins in December and ends in June.

Looks to me that although I guess there probably aren't many appointments left, they don't expect it to end until June.

If you haven't gotten a rejection letter, you're still in the mix.

I have heard of kids getting appointments up until a couple weeks before R-day.

I think there are still 10 or more appointments out there.

The CGA is being very careful this year with whom they appoint due to well-documented problems experienced the last couple years.

They are human like you and me so delays are inevitable.

If you don't have a Plan B or C you're short-changing yourself.

If you don't get in this year, you can reapply.

There may still be some NAPS slots out there too.

Good News........My S received an appointment today via a message on our answering machine....He has been given one week to accept or reject it.
He put his Coast Guard shirt and went out with friends. I will keep you all posted.
Thanks for all the input the last few weeks...

Congratulations! See I told you more were coming out.

Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!
