Approach to the Influential Person Essay

I want to write my big Common App essay about a coach I've had since I was about 8 years old. He's a really unique, incredible guy...really funny and I'm sure I can write a good essay about him. My problem is, am i supposed to cycle everything I write about him back to me somehow? I'm not sure how to go into the "he influenced me by showing me hard work bla bla bla" without sounding forced or cliched...

does anyone have any words of wisdom, or any pieces of literature about someone that i can use as reference?

thanks

i would say, start off with an especially touching memory you have of him and try to make the reader feel how special it was to you. also in the first paragraph, try to state the reasons why he's so influential in a very general and broad way that will make it easier for you to rephrase it and elaborate upon it, so it wont feel like you're recycling the same thing over and over again.

alrite thanks

Remember: YOU are the person they want to hear about. The influential person is simply a device to get you to tell them more about yourself. So, yes, everything has to cycle back to you.
