Hi everyone i want to apply for admissions/auditions for theater but im kind of confused. I want to apply to Suny Purchase, Julliard, NYU tisch, Carnegie, UCLA, and Rutgers. Ive been looking over different monologues to use but as of right now its hard to find half of the material that ill need since its so early. But i also want to be well prepared for the interviews and whole admission process. When did all of you start finding monologues and doing all the work for applying to different Universities. Thanks for your output.

The summer before senior year is a good time to start preparing if you haven’t already because applying as a Theatre major is a complicated and multi step process.

First, I recommend you add some schools to your list and that every one of them be a school you would be happy to attend. You have only the most selective audition based Theatre programs on your current list and with such a competitive admissions process you risk not getting any acceptances. Take a look at some other audition schools with higher acceptance rates and you absolutely MUST add one or two non audition schools with at least one being an academic and financial safety. You haven’t given any details about your academic/financial profile or college wishlist so it is hard to suggest any possible fits for you to research at this point. Also, make sure you understand the differences between a BA and BFA program and aren’t only looking at BFA schools. You should have both types of programs on your college list for balance. It is very nice to have different choices bc you may find that what you thought you wanted in a school when you applied has changed a bit come enrollment time.

Next, find out the audition requirements for all of the schools on your list. There may be some overlap. Then you need to find some material. If you have the means to hire a college audition coach, they will help you find and prepare the material for audition and guide you through the process. If you cannot hire someone, then speak with a drama teacher or director that you have worked with and/or someone who recently went through the admissions process, etc.

At the same time, you should be working on your applications and creating a calendar for auditions such as when you can schedule them and when you can actually audition. What truly complicates the process IMO is that each school is very different in how they handle everything. Some will allow you to schedule an audition once they open up their calendar, others will only allow you to schedule after you submit your application. You already know that each school has their own set of audition requirements but the same goes for their actual admissions process…some schools will reject you outright if you are not accepted into their Theatre program, some schools will accept you for their BA program or to their school for another major. You might receive acceptances to some schools before you even audition and then later you will hear if you were accepted to the Theatre program.

I think that you will be in good shape if you can finish your applications by September even if you wait to submit them so you can add things later. Then you can spend the rest of your time perfecting your audition material. Good luck! :)
