April 10-11 overnight visit

Did anyone attend and can you tell us about your experience? Thanks!

I attended and I had a fantastic experience. When I was applying to colleges, I liked Denison but it was not exactly my first choice. But when I got admitted with a nice merit scholarship, I decided to take a closer look. The structured stuff put on by admissions was pretty standard, but my overnight host was awesome. I stayed in Shorney (which I highly recommend because of the social life, but the building itself is old and unimpressive) and almost everyone I met was outgoing, friendly, social, and really loved Denison. The classes I went to the next day (Philosophy, History, and Political Science) were all interesting and the professors were all enthusiastic about what they taught. I would highly recommend any Political Science class, seeing as it is one of their best departments. While there were some negatives (the food, for example was average at best), my overall experience was amazing and I highly encourage any admitted student to consider doing an overnight.

We went also to take a closer look, and came back SOLD! Unlike capt, we found the program to be really unique and very revealing about the activities, academics, and most of all students and campus culture. Parents were treated like gold, no questions or people were out of bounds, and it was really interesting talking to current DU students ad hoc. We must have stopped 25 or so in everyplace imagineable and every one was positive, most were effervescing about their experiences. We found the food to be quite good, too ample, and very diverse ... just about whatever one wanted. Staff people were delightful from admissions folks, which you'd expect to bookstore, student affairs people, cafeteria workers.

This was by far the best overnight visit we've experienced, and it ended perfectly. Our dd decided DU was THE place and we all had a Whit's Frozen Custard ... which is THE BEST ICE CREAM we've had, including Penn State Creamery and others. Granville is a Norman Rockwellish, picture perfect town with many beautiful old victorian homes and, as one of the returning alums noted (a Ph.D. student from San Fran @ U.Michigan) the main square LITERALLY had 4 of the prettiest churches you'll ever see anywhere. The athletic coaches we met are wonderful people. It was so good seeing how the Greek scene had been reeled in from previous generations. Really seemed to be unobtrusive, non-separating, and many students noted the service, leadership, and friendship components of Greek life.

We gave Denison a 99% on this examination! For our $$, they don't get much better.

Thank you both for taking the time to post your experiences. We visited last summer so didn't get to see any students. We will revisit April 20-21. There are not too many schools that bother with an overnight for accepted students.(As a group) We will let you know the verdict when we return.
Did you get the sense that the party atmosphere has calmed down a bit?

My daughter is finishing her freshman year (class of 2011) and absolutely loves her school!
As for the party scene, it's college, and young adults, so there are parties. My D opted for substance free/quiet housing in East Hall and doesn't drink but goes to the parties. This is not Denison 1994 when the Greek scene ruled. My D says that while there are some that go overboard she always feels safe and the majority of the kids are responsible.

Denison is an AWESOME school and I am very pleased with my D's decision.

whistlepig: congratulations on d's decision! I'm sure she'll love it. Just went to Granville April 18 to see dd's last choir concert and go to awards ceremony. It was so well done .... all the professors processed into Swasy in full academic regalia. And the honored students were all top-notch, very impressive. Also went to pack up most of dd's stuff. We stayed at the Buxton -- no sightings of the ghost cat, though! And had to have Whits (twice). My dd is still trying to have every type of Whitser before she leaves .... lol! We will miss Granville and Denison. Good luck and enjoy the experience, it goes by way too fast!
