I just started practicing for the APUSH exam using the REA prep book. I try to read a chapter a day like the book says but taking notes really slows this down. It seems like its taking forever to get through a few pages. From past experiences is it really necessary to take adequate amount of notes?
Also I?m thinking about taking the SAT II subject test for US hist. Is the format still the same or is it just multiple choices, is the AP easier or harder, and do I need to buy a separate book?

It depends on your class. If the class is detailed then don't take notes. And Vice Versa. Also review the things every day to know them better.
