arabic at reed?

i'm a high school junior looking at reed, and i was just wondering whether or not they have an arabic program, since i had trouble finding out anything about it on the website. is studying arabic at reed or a nearby school an option, or can you only study it if you're going abroad? thanks! :)

It doesn’t look like there’s an Arabic program, sorry (or, rather, it doesn’t have its own department). But, as you said, there are programs abroad that let you study it.
When my daughter decided she was interested in Middle East studies, she really shifted the focus of her college search from LACs to small and medium-size research universities. Availability of Arabic was a major factor in that switch.

Unfortunately, all her schools of interest were on the East Coast, so I’m afraid I don’t know anything of value about Reed, or medium-size research universities in the West.

The short answer is that Reed does not have Arabic courses. However, at the beginning of the year, I did see posters advertising optional Arabic classes (they weren’t actual courses you could register for- more like an extracurricular activity taught by a professor). I don’t know if those lessons are still happening though, or much about them at all. You can subscribe to their mailing list here: https://www.lists.reed.edu/mailman/listinfo/reed-arabic</a>. Perhaps they’ll tell you something.

I don’t know if you could take Arabic at other nearby schools. You should probably e-mail the college about it.

Here’s a list of the languages Reed does have courses for:
Chinese
French
German
Greek
Latin
Spanish

Can you take Ancient Greek, or only modern?

Ancient at Reed, modern in Greece:

incomplete list, catgirl: you forgot Russian.

Whoops, sorry about that. And one of my friends even takes Russian there.
