I just got accepted to UW for undergrad and am looking to major in architecture, but I've heard it's a competitive program that doesn't start until sophomore/junior year. Can someone comment on his/her experience applying to the program? Is there any way I can have hands-on arch experience as a freshman?

I’m not familiar with the specifics but my guess would be that if you do well in the preparatory courses in your first and sophomore years, you will be admitted to the major starting . This is a BA Architectural Studies, so if you plan to practice architecture you’ll need to eventually get an M.Arch.

This is what they say on their website

I’d suggest that you ask UW’s department of architecture to give you a better idea of how they’d suggest structuring your first two years toward the goal of getting a BA in Architectural Studies. It appears that there are several 100 and 200 level architecture courses for first and sophomores that would fit into the university’s general distribution requirements.

If by “hands-on experience” you meant work experience, then I’d start looking for a summer internship now.

Thank you. And by hands-on I mean actually designing stuctures, as opposed to learning theory.

wow, I couldn’t find that online! thanks again
