Architecture major and engineering minor

Is it possible or odd to major in architecture and minor in engineering? I was thinking more on the lines of structural, civil, industrial, environmental, or mechanical engineering. I am already far into my architecture degree, but after doing some extensive research, I'm not feeling to confident about the number of good jobs available for an architect; in particular jobs that pay well. Would I look more diverse if I minor in something that compliments architecture?

No company is going to hire you as an engineer with only a minor in engineering.

That depends entirely on your school - I do not think that mine offered minors in most fields of engineering!

In general, no. If you want a better chance at a good architecture job, dive deep into architecture and do really well at it. A minor in engineering will not give you any skills that an architect is likely to use.

Let me take a shot at this. I majored in Civil Eng. and minored in Arch, and my older daughter is an architecture major. Minoring in ANYTHING in a good architecture program is a stretch, to say the least. You’re talking a 4+2 program, and if the minor in engineering was even possible, these pesky engineers will want heavy duty prerequisites before taking any worthwhile engineering courses.

We had to do it the other way 'round, i.e. a Civil Eng. program focused on buildings/structures, none of the road/sewer stuff with a bunch of architecture studios. It was massive work.

There are a few kids that did minor in business in my girl’s school, a guy who minored in music theory, and a few in music performance. My girl will likely ‘minor’ unofficially in photography, meaning she’s taking a handful of photography classes which are quite useful in architecture because of the digital work involved.

Focus on studio work, take as many history and theory classes as you can find, learn the digital stuff and you’ll be OK.
