Architecture - Undergrad - V.Tech, Syracuse , CalPoly SLO or SCAD

Am an international student (india) who has been accepted for undergraduate program architecture fall 2014 in Virgina Tech, Syracuse, Cal Poly SLO and SCAD. Dont ask how but even i am surprised :)

Am leaning towards Cal Poly because of its rankings ?

Can anyone guide me on what would be a better pick out of the 4 ?

They’re all good choices (congratulations!). To make a decision you should consider 1) the money and 2) where you intend to practice – in the U.S., India or somewhere else.

As far as I know SCAD only offers the BFA + M.Arch, not the B.Arch as the other schools do, so unless you have another reason to want a BFA, I would concentrate on the others.

I think of Syracuse as being the most design focused and the other 2 as more tech/process driven, but you’ll get a reasonable balance of both in any B.Arch program.

If you plan to practice in the U.S. you should think about where you might want to live and work eventually. Although the graduates of these schools end up all over the world, architecture is still somewhat regional and the internships and connections you make will influence you future career. If you plan to return to India, you should ask local architects for advice on name recognition.

The money is a key element to consider. Even if you’re paying full fare, think about the next step as well as it’s common for an architect in the U.S. to ultimately get an M.Arch as well.

Are you familiar with the Design Intelligence assessments of architecture programs?

Maybe you could find articles on the site that go into a little more depth with respect to strengths, weaknesses, atmosphere, etc., at each of these schools.

Thank you momrath. You are right about scad and hence am dropping that. Meanwhile have also got accepted at Pratt and hence now am truly spoilt for choice. Any idea on Pratt ?

Thanks tk. Will surely pursue the links.
