wow, thanks. but do all programs offer international licensing? so that i can work anywhere in the world after my degree?
i'm seriously considering cornell and rice, now. USC is a safety. also thinking of syracuse and cincinnati. i want the best program available...

yeah, you're right. the interview will make or mar you. you'll send the reply with the portfolio. the questions are so funny. i'll soon send them to you. but i have to go now. will be back in a coupla hours...

Jrock - what happened on email was this...
I sent you a message about Ruba.
Then, you sent me one back with a lot of information about schools.
Then, I sent you another message with more about Ruba and stuff about my schools, including hawaii (which im assuming you got because of your recent posts :) )
Then, you sent me a message, and the title said "yo" but the email was blank - which i thought was sort of weird so...
Then, I sent you a message that said "did you do that on purpose, lol"
And then you sent me that last email asking why i wrote that.
And now I'm here! Yay!

bneg - as far as my portfolio goes, youre right, i should put everything i've got into it (sigh) but I've been working on it almost non-stop for about the past 20 days or so and I'm just sick of it. I said before I had 13 pieces, but then I saw Jimminy's Portfolio and it inspired me to be better, lol, which meant I cut some things that weren't as good as the others... so now I have 10, and I will probably do one more watercolor, because I don't ahve anything from nature yet. Fall is my craziest time of year because I work, go to school, teach, play soccer, etc so I would rather put my time into working really hard on a few pieces than making a whole bunch and not feeling confident with all of them... also, one of my pieces is sort of funky - it's a drawing of a pencil sharpener, but the lines are made of words - a poem I wrote about the pencil sharpener. Then it's colored in with colored pencils :) hey, I like it, but do you think it would be too weird for a portfolio? (Be honest!) mm, what else did you ask about? Oh yes, my schools, yes 8 is a lot, but I have issues, which I'll explain after I list them.
(Not in any particular order...)
U. Miami
Harvard U.
CalPoly
USC
NC State
U. Hawaii - Manoa
Roger Williams U.
Rice U.

My first issue is my school - its a private high school but our curriculum is very different... there aren't different "levels" of classes except in math, and we offer almost no AP - designed classes, though sometimes the kids takes the tests anyway...so basically when I send in my courseload it just looks like I didn't take the hardest courseload available (which I didn't, because theres only one available!) its just a weird little school and colleges have different attitutes toward it. I don't know of any alumni from my high school that have gone to or even been accepted to the colleges above (except harvard) so I really have no clue of my chances at any.
My second issue is money - how much money I get from each school will really decide where I go. I mean, if i got a 3/4 scholarship somewhere and a 1/2 scholarship somewhere else but I liked the 2nd one better, maybe I'd choose the second, I'll just have to see what happens. But I know that If I get no money at certain places, then they are out of the question.

That said, I do still want to eliminate some, it's just hard!!! any advice is appreciated!

1)Unfortunately, I don't know how Rubas doing :( I've been wanting to call her but I have to wait until I can buy an international phone card. as for her high school, she's got either 1 or 2 years left, depending on whether she goes to the american school or the arabic one.

2)If the 25 minute email is not the first one you sent, i didnt get it, so try to send it again!

3)"this evening my mum reaffirmed her position that i cannot and must not study architecture but engineering. but i have never been more determined in my life to study archi..."
ok so heres the plan... ready for this brilliance? tell your parents you got into the engineering program, but the acceptance letter got lost in the mail so they just phoned you. then tear up the real letter before anyone sees it! hehe once youre at college, no one will know the difference!! hahahaha i like it! shhhh no one tell on jrock!

4)You asked what I thought of Rice and Cornell - well theyre both great schools, though Cornell definitly has the better name-recognition... personally I was turned off by Cornell because of social aspects, its such a big fraternity/sorority/party school, and im not into the drinking - im also more of a city girl - i like to be in one or at least close. A girl from my school that went to cornell talked a lot about how tight the scheduling is - not a lot of diversity once you've chosen your field, and if for some reason you lose credits - fail a class or decide to work a semester and take one less class or something else - if that happens everything gets screwed up and graduation can end up being postponed for a semester or even a year. Thats just what I've heard, though, and I'm sure the academics are outstanding. As for Rice, I plan to apply there myself, so I like it :) but I'd never heard of it until the beginning of the summer. I have a college book that does a write up of the best 357 schools in america, and theres lots of quotes from students there.
here is one quote about Rice from a girl who goes there: "[The students are] very future-oriented, looking for internships, summer jobs, and study abroad programs"
...I've heard this idea about Rice a lot - the people love the subject they're studying and work hard all the time to get where they want to be. I'm drawn to that kind of atmosphere because its full of driven students but somehow they all get along and arent cutthroat-competitive against each other like in the Ivies and the other good schools in the good ol' northeast :)

Hi SRmom3,

I also found your page to be very helpful. And it's funny you mentioned how common it is that architects marry each other because my aunt is an architect and so is her newlywed husband!
My question is about a post you made earlier - you said the "glorious" locations (hahaha) tended to attract people to stay, causing an overflow. In your experience, do you find it common in general for people to stay in the place where they went to college? That just never occurred to me, I suppose, because in the future I want to live in as many places as possible in the US and the world!
thanks!

to jcro:

i don't think the pencil sharpener is weird~ i don't really see a design purpose, so i guess if it is visually interesting it'll be good, especially if it can express your personality, i guess, because you have the poetry part as well...i don't think you need to worry, it's just one of your works, right? they'll see a lot of other stuff

i cannot see a particular thing you want with the list you have there~
i'm pm-ing you on this one. hehe

bneg,
heh, i agree with you on everything, especially the type of program... as for harvard, im applying to please my parents, they just want to see if I could get in, and i got this award from their alumni club in my area for academics/personality... so they think that means something and i can therefore get in hehe. they also want me close to home... lol im not an international student but ill take that as a compliment. (i think i get along with non-americans better anyway.) i live and go to school in a suburban/rural area south of boston. (i still cant figure out if i have the famous boston accent - paak my caa in the haavaad yaad)

oh, and with the pencil sharpener, i meant is it too weird to do a picture made out of words? mm its definitly different, maybe you'd have to see it to know.

it could be like graphic design~ i think as long as it shows them something that may be of interest to them - style, experience, not really techniques i guess, but more about how one can tackle a "design problem"....they always use that.

i don't know, set up a problem like: how can i show i can do this, that, i'm interested in this, that, i'm good at this, that, and try letting each included project meet that criteria, and it might just end up showing them what you want to show. so what do you think this particular piece shows?

(i also wanted to apply to HYPMS, and if i got in i was going to write an inspirational short story on "how the chinese guy with an okay-ish verbal score and UH-OH EC's got in")

whats the "M" in HYPMS? is it Michigan? MIT? Middlebury?

jcro, you mean that the email was blank? gosh! i sent an email that could have been about as large as 24KB. wow. i'm sorry, then. as i said, i didn't sleep a wink and at that time, i was getting a little bit drowsy. sorry, you got a blank email. ok, now it's going to take me a while to catch up with the discussion. i'll prolly reply the email again but it's mindblowing to think that you never got it.
