Are AP courses useful to students who want to transfer from community college?

I am going to join the Las positas Community college, (California ) in 2019 Fall . I have recently attained a green card .

  1. I want to complete the IGETCE and transfer to a UC or CSU in 2 years time . Will writing the AP s help gain credits to courses for the community college .
2)Is 4 or 5 in the AP test considered as an A grade in the course you gain credits for ?
  2. is it more beneficial to finish all the courses from the CC without trying to get credits for AP courses.

Even if Las Positas would award you credit or placement for an AP exam, the college or university you transfer to might not accept that credit. In that case you might need to take an extra class at the new college/university. So look at the AP policies of the places you are thinking of transferring to. Las Positas’ current AP policy is on pages 39 through 41 of the 2017-2018 course catalogue http://www.laspositascollege.edu/files/docs/catalog/catalog-2017-2018.pdf This table also shows how those scores are used in the CSU and UC systems.

If you are awarded credit for an AP test score, you don’t get a grade on your college transcript. You just get a note that says what course (or kind of course) was replaced by the test, and the number of credits awarded for it.

If you are currently enrolled in AP courses, go ahead and take the exams. Who knows, you might get scores good enough to get you some credit! If you aren’t enrolled in AP courses and you would need to self-study for the exams, don’t spend your time that way. Just wait and take all of your classes once you get to Las Positas.

Beyond the table in the Las Positas catalog linked above, you want to look up the AP credit listings for the 4-years schools you are targeting in order to determine what specific course subject credit you may get. For example, one 4-year school may require a 3 on AP calculus AB to get subject credit for calculus 1, but another 4-year school may require a 4, and yet another 4-year school may require a 5.
