Are AP scores taken into account for admissions purposes?

As the title says. I'm curious as to whether AP test scores matter when applying or only after you get admitted for credit. If it's the latter, it makes them a lot less stressful.

Also, would it look bad to a college if you took an AP class but not the exam in that subject? For ex: Physics - got an A- in the class but no exam taken.

No to both questions. Most colleges do not care about ap exam scores, with one exception. You can use them to explain discrepancies. I submitted mine because I got a B- in Calc BC because the class is very difficult at my school and i had a lot of other extenuating circumstances, but I got a 5 on the exam, showing that i really did know the subject.

Okay thank you! And can you choose to send some to explain discrepancies without sending all? Say that similar to you I got a B in calc but end up getting a 5 on the exam. However, I get a 4 on an exam for a class that I got an A in. Can I just send the calc score to explain the reason?

It depends on the school, some schools require that if you submit exam scores, you must submit them all.

They don’t really care too much, unless you get, say an A in the class and a 2 on the AP test. That simply doesn’t line up. An A with a 4 or 5 does! I wouldn’t stress much.

Even the A with a 2 doesn’t matter much, as anyone can have a bad day or simply be overwhelmed by too many AP tests. A series of 1s and 2s with high grades may be an indication of a problem, particularly of a school that is grading too easy, but a student who gets a mix of 3s and above, with only the occasional 2 (which you shouldn’t report anyway, unless required), will not be punished.

High scores are noticed as it’s unlikely you failed upward, you generally have to know the material to get the high score.

How do I know which schools require all scores to be sent?

They should note it on their website on the same page as the requirements for which ACT/SAT scores need to be sent.

For the record, few schools require all ACT/SAT scores to be sent, and I don’t know of any that require all AP scores, but that doesn’t mean such schools don’t exist. Even Stanford, which requires all ACT/SAT scores, lets you self-report only the AP scores you choose to report and use Score Choice for your SAT IIs.
